Global warming has a big impact on apples and how they grow. Apples that are grown in Washington state and consumed in Mexico City are considered as a case study and analyzed through seventeen impact categories.

conventional apple production has a higher environmental footprint in most categories when compared to organic production for both surface-based and mass-based functional units.

Apples are still primarily harvested by hand on a seasonal basis with farm workers carrying the apples to containers in buckets. As such, energy processes were considered for the self-propelled harvest trolley, as well as plastic containers common in the industry that can hold 30 kg of harvested apples.

apples contain carbon. Carbon dioxide is released when food is eaten or allowed to rot, and plants absorb this CO2 during the process of photosynthesis. This is part of a short-term carbon cycle.

global food production and its supply chain is responsible for about a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. production and distribution of food uses energy that produces greenhouse gases such as CO2 and overall.

fertilisers and chemicals, packing and packaging, cold storage, and transportation. These add to global warming potential. However, improved management and use of renewable energy along the product life cycle can reduce this.
