I guess the containment policy sort of prevented the spread of communism so it was somewhat successful. It was successful in Western Europe because the US made sure that communism didn't spread there by helping them rebuild after the war. It didn't really stop the spread of communism in Asia because China, North Korea, and Vietnam became communist countries but it did stop the spread of communism into South Korea.
