TASK 1 - WORKING AS A DIRECTOR

CPP TASK

Working as a director

Documentary - Meeting People is Easy - Dir. Grant Gee

Meeting People Is Easy (1998), directed by Grant Gee, is a hauntingly atmospheric documentary that captures the alienation and burnout experienced by the British band Radiohead during their OK Computer world tour. From a director’s standpoint, Gee’s work is an exemplar of how documentary filmmaking can transcend traditional concert tour films and become an immersive, avant-garde commentary on fame, exhaustion, and the music industry.

Casting

Unlike traditional narrative films, Meeting People Is Easy does not involve a structured casting process. Instead, the documentary’s “cast” consists of the members of Radiohead—Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O’Brien, Colin Greenwood, and Phil Selway—as well as journalists, crew members, and various industry figures they encounter. Gee’s approach is observational, capturing the band in unguarded moments. Thom Yorke, as the reluctant focal point, becomes the documentary’s emotional core, his discomfort with the media circus adding an introspective depth.

Design

The documentary’s visual design is striking, utilizing a grainy, high-contrast aesthetic that complements the themes of isolation and overstimulation. Gee employs a mix of handheld and surveillance-style cinematography, distorting traditional perspectives and reinforcing the sense of fragmentation. His use of overlayed text, static imagery, and rapid montages evokes the digital saturation of the late ‘90s, making the film feel as much an art installation as a documentary.

Sound Design and Music

Unsurprisingly, Meeting People Is Easy is anchored by Radiohead’s music, but Gee’s use of sound extends beyond concert performances. He manipulates ambient noise, layering interview snippets, crowd chatter, and mechanical sounds to create a soundscape that mirrors the band’s psychological exhaustion. The film features deconstructed versions of OK Computer tracks, with songs often cutting off mid-performance or fading into abstract noise, symbolizing the fragmented experience of life on tour.

Actors and Performances

Since this is a documentary, there are no traditional performances, but the candid moments Gee captures reveal the band’s emotional states. Thom Yorke’s visible frustration with interviews and press obligations stands in contrast to the group’s quieter, more introspective moments backstage. These glimpses into exhaustion and alienation lend the film an almost surreal quality, as if the band exists in a liminal space between reality and performance.

Themes and Motifs

The central theme of Meeting People Is Easy is the dehumanizing effects of fame. Gee repeatedly juxtaposes intimate moments with jarring, impersonal media interactions, highlighting the disparity between artistic integrity and industry demands. Other recurring motifs include repetition (through repeated interview questions), alienation (shots of band members isolated in vast, impersonal hotel rooms), and technological intrusion (static-filled screens and flashing lights creating a sense of sensory overload).

Interpretation

Gee’s interpretation of the OK Computer era is one of existential crisis rather than celebration. Instead of glorifying the band’s success, he frames their journey as an exhausting, disorienting experience, making the film feel like an extension of OK Computer’s themes of modern disconnection. The decision to avoid linear storytelling and instead present a collage of moments mirrors the fragmented nature of the band’s experience, making the film feel deeply immersive.

Overall Response

As a director, Gee crafts a documentary that eschews conventional storytelling in favor of an experimental, impressionistic approach. Meeting People Is Easy is not a typical rock documentary—it is a meditation on the cost of fame, a visual and auditory experiment, and a piece of art that mirrors the dissonance of Radiohead’s music. While some may find its fragmented style disorienting, it is precisely this approach that makes the film so effective in conveying its themes. Gee’s direction ensures that the audience doesn’t just observe Radiohead’s experience but feels it—a rare achievement in music documentaries.

Bibliography

(Include sources on documentary filmmaking techniques, interviews with Grant Gee, and critical analyses of Meeting People Is Easy.)

Crowdfunding pitch -

Name of film - Before the lights went down - Hacienda nights.

Project Description -

Before the lights went down (Hacienda nights) is a 15 minute short film that captures the cultural significance of Manchester's legendary nightclub/music venue The Hacienda, during its prime in the late 1980's and early 1990's. This film will explore the club's impact on music, youth culture, and the rave movement, presenting a visually striking and emotionally charged narrative that celebrates its legacy and the impact it had on the youth of the 90's. I will convey this concept via a blend of archival footage, stylized cinematography, and an immersive electronic soundtrack, the film will transport audiences into the heart if Manchester's dance revolution.

Overview of story and tone -

The story will follow the character of Alex, a young aspiring DJ, who's goal is to perform at The Hacienda. As he navigates the vibrant and chaotic world of the underground music scene, he displays the impact of iconic figures in the industry at the time, experiences the highs of cultural euphoria whilst encountering an underlying scene of commercialization, crime and the gradual decline of the Hacienda. The fil will adopt a dynamic, energetic tone with neon-drenched visuals and a pulsating soundtrack to authentically capture the era's raw energy and cultural importance. Inspired by films like '24 Hour Party People' and 'Beats', the film will balance nostalgia with an intimate character-driven narrative.

Budget Breakdown -

Pre-Production - £300 (research, script development, location scouting)

Production - £1500 (cast, crew, permits and set design)

Music Licensing - £500 (securing the rights for era-appropriate tracks)

Marketing and distribution - £500

MY THREE PLEDGE REWARDS -

A mention in the credits of the film.

There will be many posters as part of the set design, one of my pledge reward will be that if you donate you can get your name featured on them.

A poster/prop from the set

Risks and Challenges -

Music Licensing Costs & Permissions – Securing the rights to era-appropriate tracks is crucial for authenticity but can be costly and time-consuming. If licensing proves too expensive, we may need to work with independent artists to create original music inspired by the Hacienda era.

Authenticity of Set and Locations – Recreating the unique atmosphere of The Hacienda may be challenging, as the original venue no longer exists. We will need to find appropriate shooting locations or use creative production design to capture the look and feel of the club convincingly.

Budget Constraints – As an independent/student production, we are working with a limited budget. This may require innovative solutions, such as securing in-kind sponsorships, borrowing equipment, and collaborating with local creatives who share a passion for the project.

Time and Scheduling Conflicts – Coordinating cast, crew, and locations within a tight production schedule could be challenging. Efficient planning and contingency days will be necessary to ensure smooth filming.

Capturing the Energy of the Era – The Hacienda was known for its electrifying energy and cultural significance. Ensuring that performances, cinematography, and sound design authentically represent that atmosphere will require thorough research and attention to detail.

Throughout my learning in the CPP module, I have gained a wealth of insights into what is required for my future professional practice, as well as identifying the skills I need to develop in order to enhance my prospects for a successful career in the arts. One skill that I must pay more attention to is my ability to network with other creatives, when learning about the special guests careers, many of them stated how they successfully gained jobs in the industry and networking was a common theme. Networking is incredibly important regarding employability in the arts, many career opportunities arise via word-of-mouth and personal recommendation. Interacting with a variety of people both within and outside my desired filed of work would expose me to different perspectives, art forms and ways of thinking which would encourage me to experiment with new ideas or approaches in my work. Once I had gained insight into the power of networking I decided to research different events that were taking place in the city and got in contact with professional creatives in Manchester, I knew that I needed to start as soon as I could to prepare me for post-graduate. During week four of CPP I got in touch with Director and content creator Robbie Shirley who works at Gate Films in Manchester, I provided him with a document that included work I had completed inside and outside of University, using the communication skills I was taught during the module. Prior to the module I struggled with confidence and often doubted my work which prevented me from networking successfully, however I disregarded these barriers which resulted in getting a response from Robbie, inviting me to work on a project he had coming up. The shoot I was lucky enough to work on was a music video shoot, I took my camera with me and captured content for my professional social media account. From the digital marketing seminar I got a beneficial insight into marketing techniques for social and digital media and I thought the best way to kickstart my digital media skills was to create an account that I could also use to showcase my work. I learnt about the importance of persistent posting and schedule which encouraged me to get more work / work experience to document on my account, which also encouraged me to continue networking and to utilize the devices I have access to whilst still being at University.

Regarding the tasks, I knew that I needed to select ones that were beneficial to myself and my future career aspirations, personally I would like to get professional work regarding media production.

CPP CAREER PLAN

As I approach my final months at Salford University, I am focused on building a strong career in video production and videography. My main goal is to begin working in the professional industry after I graduate in July, particularly with leading establishments such as ITV, BBC and Channel 4. I have been continually researching different programmes that they have to offer, such as ITV’s technology graduate scheme that focuses on video engineering and product/project management. Applications for this scheme are yet to open, so In the meantime I am seeking as much work experience as I can get, so that I have a solid work portfolio to offer, I am currently working on multiple student and professional projects. A few weeks ago, I reached out to a local freelance director named Robbie Shirley who is also a content creator for Gate Films based in Salford Quays, I got in contact with him and showed Robbie some of my previous camera and lighting work that I had completed during modules such as Documentary to Mockumentary and Video Project and some of my own photography work, I carefully expressed my future goals and my passion for the industry. Robbie positively responded to my work and mentioned that he had a music video shoot coming up which he was directing and asked me to be a runner for the day, during the shoot I gained a vast amount of knowledge as to what it is like to work with industry equipment and the fast paced environment. Prior to being on set I borrowed a photography from the New Adelphi equipment store, and offered to take some BTS of the shoot which worked in my favour as it showed I was willing to go further than what was asked from me. During the shoot I assisted the director and production team with a variety of on-set tasks , ensuring smooth workflow and assisted with the set up of the set. I gained hands-on experience in a professional studio setting, strengthening my understanding of high-end production and industry standard equipment. Both the director and music artist in the shoot were pleased with the photos and used them on social media which broadened my network as it provided me with a wider audience on my professional media account. In the next few months I am hoping to work with Robbie Shirley again as he mentioned that he would contact me again when he had another freelance shoot, I aim to attend local networking events to broaden my chance of gaining more opportunities to hopefully build my professional portfolio and my own skillset.

A strong portfolio is one of the most effective tools for securing work in the film and television industry. Over the course of the next six months, I will compile a professional showreel that highlights my best cinematography work. This will include footage from university projects, work experience placements, and independent short films that I hope to work on after uni. A compelling showreel will serve as a visual résumé, showcasing my technical skills and artistic vision to potential employers and collaborators. Furthermore, I will continue working on projects with fellow filmmakers, ensuring that my portfolio remains fresh and dynamic.

While securing full-time employment is the ultimate goal, freelancing provides a viable entry point into the industry. Many production companies and independent filmmakers seek freelance camera operators and cinematographers for short-term projects. During the first year of my career, I will actively pursue freelance opportunities, offering my services for corporate videos, music videos, and short films. By doing so, I will not only gain practical experience but also establish a reputation within the industry.

In addition, I will apply for internships and entry-level positions within renowned production companies such as BBC Studios, ITV, and smaller independent film houses. By diversifying my job search, I aim to increase my chances of securing stable, long-term employment. Despite careful planning, there are several challenges that I anticipate facing during my first year in the industry. One of the most significant obstacles is the competitive nature of entry-level roles. The film and television industry is highly sought-after, making it difficult to stand out among other aspiring professionals. To overcome this challenge, I will differentiate myself through a strong portfolio, proactive networking, and continued skill development. Attending industry events, shadowing experienced cinematographers, and engaging in online film communities will increase my visibility and credibility within the field. Financial stability is another concern for many early-career freelancers. While pursuing my passion for filmmaking, I recognize the importance of maintaining financial security. To mitigate this risk, I will balance freelance projects with part-time work in related fields, such as event videography, photography, or video editing. This will ensure a steady income while allowing me to build industry experience. Additionally, I will apply for funding opportunities and grants that support emerging filmmakers, providing financial assistance. As I build a steady portfolio and secure funding, my long-term goal is to create a documentary similar to the one I made at university about music in Manchester and the challenges of the current scene. This project will explore the evolution of Manchester's independent music culture, the struggles of emerging artists, and the impact of digital streaming on local talent. By drawing on my previous experience in documentary filmmaking, I aim to produce a visually compelling and socially relevant film that captures the essence of the city’s music scene. This documentary will not only serve as a passion project but also act as a stepping stone towards more significant filmmaking opportunities, helping me establish a unique voice in the industry.passion projects and independent productions.
