( 1556-1605 CE)
Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar ascended the throne at the age of 14 under the guardianship of Bairam Khan. Akbar was born on 25 October 1542. Akbar was the greatest of the Mughals and hence known as Akbar the Great. He reigned from 1556 CE-1605 CE and extended his power over most of the Indian Sub continent.
In order to preserve the unity of his empire, Akbar adopted programs that won the loyalty of the non-Muslim populations of his realm. Akbar started Din-i-lahi, a socio-religious path to bridge the differences among different communities. He reformed and strengthened his central administration and also centralized his financial system and reorganized tax-collection processes. Although he never renounced Islam, he took an active interest in other religions, persuading Hindus, Parsis, and Christians, as well as Muslims, to engage in religious discussion before him. Illiterate himself, he encouraged scholars, poets, painters, and musicians, making his court a centre of culture. He died on 27 October 1605.

Babur had gifted separate provinces to his other 3 sons. Humayun had inherited an empty treasury. The army was a combination of people from different countries and language groups. He faced opposition and lacked military ability. His father had failed to crush the power of Afghans for good. Hence, he was defeated by Sher Shah Suri (an Afghan) and was forced to leave India and take refuge in Iran in 1540. In 1555, Humayun restored the Mughal empire in India by defeating Sikander Suri, a weak successor of Sher Shah. He died in 1556 CE after slipping from the steps of his library building at Delhi.

He assumed the title of Alamgir. He abolished the inland duties and octroi to please his subjects and also abolished the celebration of New Year ( Nauroz). He was a Muslim fanatic and opposed religious tolerance. Aurangzeb invited Shivaji ( under whom Marathas had become powerful ) for talks where he was imprisoned but Shivaji managed to escape. Aurangzeb conquered Bijapur and Golconda in Deccan but due to his short sighted policies, his vast empire went out of bis grip and many governors revolted against him, estabishing themselves as independent rulers.
