Electric/Signal Levels

Electric instruments rely on electrical amplification to increase their sound output.

The primary reason for using amplifiers is to boost the instrument's volume, especially when some instruments are naturally quieter, necessitating a microphone pickup and amplifier.

Amplifiers not only enhance volume but also influence the instrument's sonic characteristics, resulting in numerous configuration possibilities.

When recording electric instruments, you can either capture the amplified sound from the connected amplifier or directly interface with your recording setup.

Signal levels differ, with microphones generating mic-level signals, instruments producing instrument-level signals, and professional audio equipment operating at line level.

Lower-output signals may require pre-amplification to reach an optimal level, which is sometimes facilitated by built-in pre-amps in recording interfaces.
