There are, and will always be, societal standards expected to follow. These norms practically dictate our lives. An article from Simply Psychology states that, " For example, students, neighbors and patients in a hospital are all aware of the norms governing behavior. And as the individual moves from one group to another, their behavior changes accordingly". In order for someone to be them self, they need to escape from the rules that have been pressed on them, like Huck does when he befriends Jim, demolishing the societal expectations of racism, discrimination, and segregation.
Another realization from The Hague Institute of Global Justice, show how "in today’s globalized society, our lives are so intertwined with one another, that one’s freedom often depends on another person’s freedom. Therefore, it is more essential than ever to teach the next generation the importance of freedom to bring about change". This is referring to FDR's Four Freedoms speech. During the speech, FDR is expressing the freedom of speech, worship, fear, and from want. With this in mind, the article is correct. In order to achieve change, our youth needs to be educated on not only what freedom means, but how it works as well.

Quotes that show maturity:

"You gwyne to have considable trouble in yo' life, en considerable joy. Sometimes you gwyne to git hurt, en sometimes you gywne to git sick; but every time yous gwyne get well again" (27).

"We played robber now and then about a month, and then I resigned. We hadn't robbed anybody, hadn't killed any people. I couldn't see no profit in it" (21).

"People would call me a low-down abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum, but that don't make a difference. I ain't a-going to tell" (50).

These quotes show that Huck and Jim have realistic attitudes about life which makes them mature. They see things how they are, and stick by their opinions even if they are judged.

"Boggs throws up both hands and says, "O Lord don't shoot!" Bang! goes the first shot, and he staggers back," (Twain 144).
"By and by he rolled out and jumped up to his feet looking wild, and he see me and went for me. He chased me round and round the place with a clasp knife, calling me the Angel of Death, and saying he would kill me, and then I couldn't come for him no more" (Twain 37).
"It made my eyes water a little to remember her crying there all by herself in the night, and them devils laying there right under her own roof, shaming her and robbing her..." (Twain 188).
Through this theme in the novel, Twain is expressing to his audience that humanity isn't always good; in fact, people can be very cruel.
Modern Examples-
Shootings happening in churches, mosques, and religious buildings.
Assault and abuse happening in families from drug use.

(Twain 121). This quote views how the life after freedom from society is reached because they are in their own world on the river. They have escaped standards, which is shown by them being naked.

Overall, Twain was trying to tell his 1885 audience that not all people are morally correct, but it is up to us to always try to do the right thing. For example, Huck didn't like that the King and Duke were stealing money, because it was morally wrong. It was then up to Huck to make the right choice to benefit others around him, even though the people around him were making bad choices. This lesson is still applicable to today, because we still need to remember to make the right choices, even when others around us are not.
