During excess supply, the government's ability to meet the farmers' needs are questionable. Farmers are also demanding compensation for the Union Minster Ajay Mishra's hit and run case of 4 protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri. Farmers have specifically asked for financial compensation of deceased farmers from previous conflicts which can trigger certain socio-economic conflicts. They want it to be increased, adding a 50 percent premium to whatever it costs them to produce wheat and rice.

The M.S.P. should act as a form of social insurance, by sparing the majority of India’s population, which still depends on farming incomes, from the volatility that comes with changing weather patterns and internationally set grain prices.

Economists often criticize the MSP because it can lead to inefficiencies and market distortions.
