-There are three food spheres in the world. In the Old World and Europe, people ate with forks and spoons. In Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South Asia, people ate with their hands. In East Asia, people ate with chopsticks.

-The first chopsticks were found more than 7000 years ago in China.

-Ivory chopsticks were found dating from the Zhou period. According to classical literature, Han Feizi, King Zhou’s kingdom was predicted to fall because of his ivory chopsticks use, symbolizing his extravagance.

-In the late Zhou period, people using chopsticks was common, although people still ate with their hands. Chopsticks were another tool they could use. Wood and bamboo chopsticks were popular during this time.

-In the Classic of Rites, guidelines for using chopsticks were written. For example, chopsticks should not be used to eat millet (a category of grain).

-During the Han period, the cultural and economic center moved south, where rice was common. Over time, rice became a staple in Chinese people’s diets.

-In the Sui and Tan dynasty, chopsticks became the main utensil for eating.

-Chopstick use traveled from China to other places. Vietnam and Japan were the most influenced by Chinese culture.

-In Japan, chopsticks are commonly made out of wood. In Vietnam, chopsticks are commonly made out of bamboo.

-Other groups of people who adopted chopsticks as essential were the Mongolian and Khitan people.

筷子起源于中国。中国人使用筷子的历史极其悠久——超过七千年。周朝时期，人们使用象牙制成的筷子。《韩非子》记载商纣王曾使用象牙筷，这种奢侈行为被视为导致其王朝覆灭的因素之一。

后来筷子逐渐普及。虽然人们仍保留用手抓食的习惯，但筷子提供了更便捷的用餐方式。当时木制和竹制筷子最为常见。

《礼记》记载：食用小米时不可用筷子，这是当时的饮食礼仪规范。

汉代南方稻作农业兴盛，稻米成为主食。人们每日食用米饭，并开始使用筷子进食。

至隋唐时期，筷子已成为主要进食工具。

筷子从中国传播至其他国家。越南和日本也开始使用筷子。日本人使用木制筷子，而越南人则偏爱竹制筷子。蒙古人和契丹人也采用了筷子。

On Wednesday, Li You went to the office. He used to be late often. Today he arrived early. The teacher said, “You're early today.” Li You said, “I'll come early from now on.” The teacher said, “You need to review every day. Don't just study before exams.” Li You said, “Okay, I understand.”

3. 上课的时候，我一边听老师说话，一边记笔记。 Shàngkè de shíhòu, wǒ yībiān tīng lǎoshī shuōhuà, yībiān jì bǐjì. During class, I listened to the teacher while taking notes.

4. 老师正在讲语法，我们觉得有点难。 Lǎoshī zhèngzài jiǎng yǔfǎ, wǒmen juéde yǒudiǎn nán. The teacher was explaining grammar, and we felt it was a little difficult.

5. 我已经学了八个新词。 Wǒ yǐjīng xué le bā gè xīn cí. I already learned eight new words.

6. 中午十二点以后，我去了图书馆。 Zhōngwǔ shí’èr diǎn yǐhòu, wǒ qù le túshūguǎn. After 12 noon, I went to the library.

7. 我看了一封朋友写给我的信。 Wǒ kàn le yī fēng péngyǒu xiě gěi wǒ de xìn. I read a letter my friend wrote to me.

8. 那是一个很长的信，里面有很多有意思的故事。 Nà shì yī gè hěn cháng de xìn, lǐmiàn yǒu hěn duō yǒuyìsi de gùshì. It was a long letter, with many interesting stories inside.

9. 除了看书以外，我还复习了生词。 Chúle kàn shū yǐwài, wǒ hái fùxí le shēngcí. Besides reading, I also reviewed vocabulary.

10. 下午三点，我和同学一起去运动场。 Xiàwǔ sān diǎn, wǒ hé tóngxué yīqǐ qù yùndòngchǎng. At 3 p.m. I went to the sports field with classmates.

11. 我会打篮球，可是今天我不能打，因为我有作业。 Wǒ huì dǎ lánqiú, kěshì jīntiān wǒ bù néng dǎ, yīnwèi wǒ yǒu zuòyè. I can play basketball, but today I cannot play because I have homework.

12. 老师说我们可以下个星期再比赛。 Lǎoshī shuō wǒmen kěyǐ xià gè xīngqī zài bǐsài. The teacher said we may have another game next week.

13. 今天很忙，但是也很有意思。 Jīntiān hěn máng, dànshì yě hěn yǒuyìsi. Today was busy, but also very interesting.

3. 昨天我看了一篇关于医学的文章。 Zuótiān wǒ kàn le yī piān guānyú yīxué de wénzhāng. Yesterday I read an article about medicine.

4. 文章里有很多新的词。 Wénzhāng lǐ yǒu hěn duō xīn de cí. The article had many new words.

5. 我问老师：“要学多少医学知识才可以当护士？” Wǒ wèn lǎoshī: “Yào xué duōshǎo yīxué zhīshì cái kěyǐ dāng hùshì?” I asked the teacher: “How much medical knowledge must I learn to become a nurse?”

6. 老师说：“你要上很多节课，还要做实习。” Lǎoshī shuō: “Nǐ yào shàng hěn duō jié kè, hái yào zuò shíxí.” The teacher said: “You need to take many classes, and also do internships.”

7. 我说：“这些是我喜欢的学习。” Wǒ shuō: “Zhèxiē shì wǒ xǐhuān de xuéxí.” I said: “This is the kind of studying I like.”

我们先坐地铁，再走路去图书馆。 Wǒmen xiān zuò dìtiě, zài zǒulù qù túshūguǎn. We will first take the subway, then walk to the library.

每天早上，地铁里都很多人。 Měitiān zǎoshang, dìtiě lǐ dōu hěn duō rén. Every morning, the subway is always crowded.

快要下课了，我们得准备回家。 Kuài yào xiàkè le, wǒmen děi zhǔnbèi huí jiā. Class is about to end soon, we must get ready to go home.
