A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation. — Wikipedia

Phobia means having irrational fear that is highly unlikely to cause harm. Even though phobias are irrational, it is still not advisable to make fun of people who suffer from it.

When we talk about phobias, we generally refer to: dog phobia, cat phobia, spider phobia, phobia of enclosed spaces, insect phobia, aeroplane phobia, blood phobia, injection phobia, etc.
Here some phobias:
Anthophobia is the irrational fear of all flowers or anxiety induced due to some specific types of flowers.
Barophobia is the irrational fear of gravity. Individuals who have barophobia can have a fear of falling due to gravity or might be afraid that they will float away as gravity ceases to exist.
People affected by claustrophobia will often go out of their way to avoid confined spaces, such as lifts, tunnels, tube trains, and public toilets. But avoiding these places may reinforce the fear. Well, the feeling of suffocation is real.
Dentophobia can be known as dental fear, dental anxiety, or dentist phobia. People with this phobia are afraid of visiting the dentist for dental care. A visit to a dentist is anyway, not such a pleasurable activity.
People with entomophobia are afraid of insects. This phobia is overwhelming and causes significant anxiety among the people who suffer from it. Well, I guess everyone is a little scared of insects. No one wants insects crawling over them.
Felino means cat in Latin. People with Felinophobia fear cats. Well, we can undoubtedly exclude them from the list of cat persons.
Halitophobia makes people think they are suffering from bad breath. Even if doctors assure them everything is alright, they still fear that their breath stinks. This phobia sounds like a really stinky one.
Lygophobia is the fear of darkness. Honestly, I think everyone is a little afraid of being in dark places. Now you know why you should not prank people in darkness.
People who have necrophobia are afraid of corpses or items associated with a death such as coffins, tombstones, and funerals.
Parasitophobia is an anxiety disorder that makes affected people fear parasites. People who have this phobia might think their body is infected with parasites, even though they have no symptoms. Tapeworms are scary anyway, so better be careful about them.
Zoophobia induces anxiety due to being afraid of animals. It can be due to any animal, of course, except the humans. Are not we all afraid of one or other animals? I am scared to death of snakes.

A phobia is when someone has an irrational fear of an object such as fear of heights, fear of snakes, and other things. The name phobia is derived from Phobos, who is the Greek god of fear and most phobias have a Greek name. Most all phobics know what causes their fear and they know how to solve their phobia by just staying away from a certain object or place. This could be very disturbing to the individual because some phobics are scared of open places (Agoraphobia) and some are scared of large crowds, this could be harmful to their social lives, they couldn't go to movies, concerts, or even sporting events. When a person has a phobia and they are experiencing their fear they may suffer from panic attacks or even severe anxiety.
There are some striking statistics regarding phobias. Women are more likely to suffer from phobias rather than men for example; it was estimated that 95 percent of all Zoophobics (fear of animals) are women of average or lower intelligence. Specific phobias can strike more than 1 and 10 people in the U.S. alone. No one knows just what causes them, though they seem to run in families so they must be passed on from generation to generation. Phobias usually first appear in adolescence or adulthood. Phobias start suddenly and tend to be more persistent in adults rather than in a child: only about 20 percent of adult phobias vanish on there own. When children have specific phobias such as fear of animals, those fears usually disappear over time. Approximately 4 to 5 percent of the U.S. population have one or more clinically significant phobias in a given year. Specific phobias occur in people of all ages. The average age of onset for a social phobia is between 15 and 20 years of age, although is can often begin in childhood or in late adulthood. .
Freud was one of the first people to carefully study phobias. He believied that the phobias object is chosen to symbolize the real source of fear or conflict.

My phobia

We are all afraid of something in our lives and this is absolutely natural. I think even the bravest people have their fears. But there are things that especially frighten us, sometimes causing a feeling of panic terror. So, my phobia was the fear of snakes.
The appearance of these reptiles alone does not cause much sympathy in principle. Long, slippery, they slowly wriggle along the ground, like some clumsy alien creatures. During hunting or in case of danger, snakes, on the contrary, rush at their prey with a sharp jerk, gaping a large poisonous mouth with a long tongue and sharp teeth.
When I see snakes on TV, I feel a sense of disgust and strive to quickly change the channel. Of course, I will never force myself to cross the threshold of the terrarium in our city zoo. Even wildlife stores where these reptiles can be sold, I try to avoid.
My dislike of snakes certainly has its roots, which lie in early childhood. Once, when I was a very little girl, my parents and I went to the circus. There, after the show program, the trainers offered the children to chat and take pictures with the animals. Dad and I had a big python on our laps. At first, the snake was just very cold and heavy, but then it began to twist sharply in our hands. It scared me so much that I burst into tears and ran out of the hall.
After this incident, the mere mention of snakes often brought me into a state of horror. This lasted for quite a long time, but today the situation has improved significantly. I can already talk calmly about snakes and even look at their images in books. Fortunately, we live in a region where there are practically no such reptiles, so there is no need for me to meet them in reality and experience fear again.
