  • August 15, 1948 the Republic of Korea came into being. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea was formed less than a month later.
  • Seoul was recaptured by Chinese and North Korean forces on January 4, 1951.
  • The UN forces liberate Seoul for the fourth time. Fighting has wreaked havoc on the city, reducing the population to a fraction of what it was before the conflict. This is important because Seoul is a big city in Korea and when it was taken lots of people died.
  • MacArthur is relieved of command by US President Harry S. Truman for insubordination and refusing to fight a limited war. Lieut. Gen. Matthew Ridgway succeeded him as UN commander.
  • At Kaesong, peace talks between the UN and the communists begin. The talks do not, however, signal the end of the conflict; fighting will continue for another two years. The peace negotiations will be moved to the village of P'anmunjm in October. This is important because there was a chance of peace.
