Cece gets sick as a child and loses her hearing. She has to wear a hearing aid and a special device on her chest called a Phonic Ear. She relies on her Phonic Ear and lip-reading to hear others. She feels different and lonely, and often ended up choosing the wrong people to be friends with. She invented a superhero named “El Deafo” to handle situations when she felt uncomfortable. This was a great story, and I enjoyed this book. The character of Cece was very relatable, where I felt her emotions of happiness and loneliness. I liked the author’s note at the end, which stated that this book was based upon her life. I appreciated the graphic novel format. I gave this book 4/5 stars because the characters were all rabbits, and I think that drawings of people should have been used. I would recommend this book to 3rd-5th graders. I like this book because it has good pictures and funny words
I recommend this book to 3rd to 8th graders because they can relate to Greg and others.
