Yes I do think that Booker T Washington is part of the progressive movement. He outlined ideas at the Atlanta Exspsition of how valuable the African American race was to era of industrial progress. "Cast down your buckets among these people who have without strikes and labour wars, tilled your fields, cleared your forests, builded your railroads and cities, and brought forth treasures from the bowels of the earth, and helped make possible the magnificent representation of the South." He explained that African Americans were just as deserving of the same rights as whites and that it was important for the rights to be exercised.

I do think that W.E.B Du ois was part of the progressive movement. He did believe that African Americans must strive to help themselves by working together ( As a nation, not just as a race) to fight for equal rights as he states in his book. "While it is a great truth to say that the negro must strive and strive mightily to help himself, it is equally true that unless his striving be not simply seconded, but rather aroused and encouraged, by the initiative of the richer and wiser environmenting group, he cannot hope for great success."

One point that Booker T Washignton and W.E.B Du Bois disagreed on was the way that African Americans fight for their rights. Booker T Washington said it would be a severe and constant struggle rather than artificial forcing. That they should stand together to continue the long fight. Du Bois believed that Washington's doctrine made the whites, south and North shift the burden of African American rights to only African Americans. he believed the nation must work together, not african americans alone.

I think W.E.B Du Bois makes a better argument. He states that"the way for people to gain their reasonable rights is not by throwing them away and insisting that they do not want them; that they way for people to gain respect is not by continually belittling and ridiculing themselves; that, on the contrary, Negros must insist continually, in season and out of season, that voting is necessary to modern manhood, that color discrimination is barbarism, and that black boys need education as well as white boys." Du Bois felt that Washington expected African Americans to "silent submission" to civil inferiority and that is not a way to fight for rights.

He encouraged African Americans " to improve their lives by cleanliness, industry, thrift, diversified farming, painting and mending, family budgeting, and better planning". He wanted them to be self sufficient and felt this was answer to the struggles that the African Americans were facing and felt that this wold be the turning point to give African Americans a better life. He was a firm believer in equal rights and felt that African Americans should not be dismissed.

I feel that W. E.B DuBois is part of the progressive movement as well. He was a firm believer in education and felt they needed to fight for what was right. They could do this be getting an education and holding themselves high on their morals and what they know is right. The Niagara movement is a great example of this ,this movement was a draft of demands to end all forms of discrimination. He felt that everyone should have a voice no matter the color of their skin.

DuBois was fearful that the African Americans would never be seen as equals and unfortunately died before he was able to see this happen. Washington felt it was a constant struggle for rights and I am sure would still be saying the same now. DuBois did not agree with Washington's belief that African Americans only focus on vocational skills rather than educating themselves further. Without education any strides that the African Americans made could be taken away from them.

He said "I want to see my race live such high and useful lives that they will not be merely tolerated, but they shall actually be needed and wanted because of their usefulness to the community." He felt that with his way of thinking/ teaching African Americans could excel in life and not be mere by standers, but be the man in charge and to hold themselves to a high standard.

Washington, perhaps the era's most celebrated black leader, spelled out a plan of racial accommodation as a path toward progress." He supported equal rights for African Americans and he felt that they should not be ignored. The book even states that "Washington outlined ideas that remained at the center of debate among black Americans for decades." Booker T. Washington outline and proved that African Americans worked hard and deserved the same rights as whites and that is exactly what he encouraged and supported.

Even though he came up with alternatives, he still believed in equal rights overall.

To me, it seemed that he was more about African Americans proving to everyone that they are worthy of equal rights. He encouraged education. He encouraged African Americans to gain respect. I believe that Du Bois was big on voting rights, civic equality, and education of youth. De Bois also mentioned how the whole nation needs to work together to gain equal rights for African Americans rather than just African Americans working together to gain equal rights.
