In the section where they were talking about Organizing The School Day, I thought it was interesting how they talked about snack, recess and lunch. As an adult, if I haven't eaten in a while or didn't get a good breakfast, a lot of times, I feel tired ad the morning drags on. with such a busy schedule I often don't have time to "snack". I can relate to how the students must feel - especially when there isn't time set aside.

Diversity, Diversity Diversity. There was a great deal discussed on how "undiverse" many of our schools are. I can
honestly say that there are students of different ethnic, or religious backgrounds that I have no idea about. I really felt that the section on learning about children's home cultures is really important. It was eye opening because often I am unaware of what their "outside of school" life is really like. I thought that it was very interesting to read about the backgrounds and "thought" processes of the different ethnic groups mentioned (African America, Latino and Hispanic.)

When I read the section on retention it really "struck a nerve." Although I do understand much of what the author is saying, I also would like to see more schools consider looking at retention in kindergarten or first grade. Maybe the creation of a classroom of K-1 students (multi-age) that aren't really ready for 1st but are "moving on." I look at what it does to students who have been aloud to develop bad work habits, or parents who aren't given the right strategies to help their children. It's a snowball affect, and by the time they get to 4th or 5th grade they are behind, and have large gaps in their learning and in their socialization with other students.

New education trends..."do not bode well for children. They do not educate the whole child, support well-rounded growth, or inspire children's excitement for learning and they seem to add undue stress for students and teachers." It would seem like the people who are creating educational policies and standards, curriculum and guidelines would focus more on children's proper development, however, that really isn't the case. Often times I find that the things that I am suppose to teach, in the amount of time at a certain level are inappropriate for the children's developmental abilities.

After reading about the age group that I teach everyday, I decided to read the 13-year-old section because that is how old my daughter is. It was very eye opening. I have worked with 9 and 10 year olds for 15 years, but I only have 1 child to go through all these stages. It was amazing to see what types of things were "normal" for her age and almost what types of things I could expect.
