(1) Cory Maxson

This is Cory Maxson. He is Troy's son. In the beginning of the play all he wanted to do was play college football, but his father wouldn't sign the paper because he didn't want Cory to end up like he did. As he got older he got farther from his father. He believe he had to do whatever his father wanted, or thought was right. Cory just wanted to say no to him for once.

(2) Character Trait (Cory)

Character trait- Rebellious
Quote- "Coach Zellman say the recruiter gonna be coming by to talk to you. You gotta sign the permission papers. . . . Mr. Stawicki say he gonna hold my job for me until after the football season. Say starting next week I can work weekends. . . . I get good grades, Pop. That’s why the recruiter wants to talk with you. You got to keep up your grades to get recruited. This way I’ll be going to college. I’ll get a chance . . ."
Explanation- This shows Cory is the product of the 1950s teen life. He was rebellious and wanted to play football when his father kept telling him no. All the teens in the 1950s were going through a rebellious stage of their teen years. They were doing things their parents disagreed with all the time.

Character trait- Afraid
Quote- "The whole time I was growing up . . . living in his house . . . Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere. It weighed on you and sunk into your flesh. It would wrap around you and lay there until you couldn’t tell which one was you anymore. That shadow digging in your flesh. Trying to crawl in. Trying to live through you. Everywhere I looked, Troy Maxson was staring back at me . . . hiding under the bed . . . in the closet. I’m just saying I’ve got to find a way to get rid of that shadow, Mama."
Explanation- This shows he is afraid of his father. He can't tell him anything. Cory feels he can't say no to his father he has to listen to him or Troy makes him feel bad or afraid.

(4) sympathy, strength, and weaknesses

Yes, I sympathize with Cory. All he wants is a supporting father. He wants someone to talk to. He wants to not have to say yes even if he thinks it's wrong. He wants to be able to say no and have a voice. I feel every kid should get with their parents. One of Cory's strengths is he has hope. He never gave up and even though he got told no he made something out of his life. His weakness is not forgiving. He is stubborn and thinks doing some things will change how it will make him.

This song talk's about how you got to be bigger and follow your dreams. In the first line, it says "I was raised in a small-town kinda place, Where it is what it is and you don't complain." This relates to Cory because even though he has big dreams to play college football he was raised to listen and not complain. So in the end he had to listen to his father and ended up not playing.

Family/Duties
“Like you? I go out of here every morning… bust my butt…putting up with them crackers everyday…cause I like you? You about the biggest fool I ever saw. It’s my JOB. It’s my RESPONSIBILITY! You understand that? A man got to take care of his family. You live in my house… sleep on my bed clothes…fill you belly up with my food… cause you my son. You my flesh and blood. Not ‘cause I like you! Cause it’s my duty to take care of you. I OWE a responsibility to you!

This quote supports the theme because In this scene it shows how Cory was asking if his father likes him and troy goes on explaining how he doesn't have to like him it is just his duty because they are family. They are blood.

(9) Corys Motto

"You're just jealous"

I picked this for Cory's motto because he says this a few times in the play. For example, when he was fighting with Troy about not signing the papers. He says "You're just jealous". Cory said this because he was getting a chance is a higher level sport where Troy never got the chance.
