-At his job Winston is responsible for re-writing history and rewriting citizens faits 
- Today he gets the assignment to re-write what happened to Comrade Withers 
- Comrade Withers went against the government and was vaporizes for these horrible actions

-In society Comrade Ogilvy is the perfect man in society, following all the rules.

-With the concept of double thinking it allows workers to think about a topic and believe both the contradicting sides at the same time
- With this happening in society the people begin to believe false statements such as their famous sayings, "war is peace", "freedom is slavery", etc. 
-The people begin to realize all these false statements and work for nothing and that is how the Ministry of Truth works
-The citizens of Oceania partake in the Ministry of Truth because they have in a sense been brainwashed

- Winston wakes up with a phone in his hand. He is not sure exactly where he is yet he assumes he is in the Ministry of Love
- Winston does not know exactly how long he has been there, all he knows is that he is super hungry
- He tries to ignore the overwhelming noise from the TV screens around him
- When thinking he has food, Winston goes to look in his pocket, however a random voice yells at him to not reach in his pocket
- Winston remembers the previous cell he was in (much worse and dirtier; more people crammed into a space)
- Winston wonders what's going to happen to him and if he is going to be tortured or become an unperson
- Winston sees a lot of men come and go into his cell
- Many are taken to room 101 and do not return
- Room 101 seems to be a bad punishment for not listening to the guards to the voice

- Winston wonders about O'Brien and Julia 
- O'Brien ironically walks in and talks to Winston when his guard hits Winston on the elbow ( Winston realizes that one of the worst pain is physical)
- Winston wakes up on a cot with O'Brien in the room and another man
- He realizes that he has bruises all over him but does not know how long he has been beaten or how it even went down. 
- Winston realizes that the beating have lessoned and the guards are getting somewhat nicer but they change their feelings quickly
-  Winston is suddenly strapped into a chair with O'Biren controlling a lever
- The lever... when pulled will cause pain to Winston
- O'Brein pulled on the lever and asked Winston questions to make him forget about the past
- Winston spends his days doing exercises and thinking about the past even though he was supposed to forget about it

The reader gets to see how Big Brother tries to alter the past to their liking. They rewrite the history (literally) and use pain as a way to destroy the people who do remember.
