Lewis was disciplined, loyal, observant, and had detailed writing. This made him the best Captain because he wasn’t new ot commanding people and was loyal to Jefferson throughout the expedition. He was also more qualified because he knows his plants very well and was very observant and would write detailed descriptions of the wildlife they encountered.

He was one of the five chief hunters. He helped the army by feeding and making shelters for them.

John Collins would make a good private because he knew how to hunt. That way, he can sustain the group and make sure they live well. Since he knew how to hunt, he knew some of the animals as well so they can help identify and know which ones are okay to eat. Since he worked in the army, he should have good discipline and know what to do.

George Drouillard was recommended by Captain Daniel Bissell who claimed him to be an excellent hunter and was educated in the character and sign language of indians. He acted well in the face of danger where many need to keep their cool and have a level head. Lewis often praised him to be the most skilled hunter among the men. He often times played a key role when the Corp would encounter natives as a means of communicating with them. He also helped search for 2 men who had been taken from their company by the Oto tribe.

Drouillard successfully brought back both men and was accompanied by 9 oto Indians including Little Thief and Big Horse. He was Also assigned to small hunting groups during the winter when they stayed by the Mandan Tribe. They would get food for the Corp as well as meat to trade with the Mandan for other food items. He was a very valuable non military member because he was resourceful and knew the land well and could communicate with many of the Native tribes the Corp encountered.
