The winds are getting stronger and that accounts for the higher wave conditions, and also those low-pressure systems are tracking further to the south and what that does is it means the waves will come from a slightly more southerly direction. Since the wave direction changes there is a change in orientation of the coastline as well. With a long beach, when wave conditions change two or three degrees the alignment of the beach will change. This change in orientation of the coastline will cause erosion in some parts of the beaches. With rising sea levels, waves are washed further into the shore, increasing the rate of erosion of the Apostles. This can be seen from how 5 of the Apostles have been completely washed away. Global warming has also resulted in the rise of temperatures, which in turn increases the rate of degradation of the 12 Apostles. In fact, in a number of spots, the road is now only metres from the tide line. This is a very beautiful and fairly unique experience for driving and sightseeing. However, once the ocean breaches the road, locals will be cut off and tourists will miss out on this iconic journey.

In conclusion, climate change has already affected and eroded 5 of the 12 Apostles, and it is not going to be long before all the apostles are eroded. Therefore, we must play our part in environmental conservation to protect these natural scenic sites.

Due to global warming, the world faces warmer winters that will likely boost the populations of the burrowing animals. In the report issued by the scientists, it says that the warmer winters will cause the animals to reproduce more, causing the ground to become more disturbed due to the rise in activity underground near the archaeological grounds thus, making the stonework less stable and more likely to fall. 

The hotter and drier summers due to the increased average temperatures would also increase the number of visitors to the ancient sites. Currently, there are about one million visitors a year, which increases the disturbances underground possibly risking the Stone henge. 

Global warming also causes increased humidity and the warmer and wetter ground conditions mean that it is the ideal time for earthworms to reproduce. Worms are a major part of the mole’s diet, thus creating an endless cycle of reproduction between the animals. The soft, wet soil also makes it easier for the animals to dig than does the drier ground which causes the ground to be more disturbed and so it could cause the Stone henge to be uprooted. 

With increasing global surface temperatures the possibility of more droughts and increased intensity of storms will likely occur. As more water vapour is evaporated into the atmosphere it becomes fuel for more powerful storms to develop. If storms become worse, and the sea levels rise, the British heritage sites might be washed right out into the sea with the higher tides.  

Hence, in many ways, climate change could risk one of the oldest historical sites in the world being destroyed. 

Climate change leads to global warming. As temperatures rise, mass coral bleaching events and infectious disease outbreaks are becoming more frequent. Additionally, carbon dioxide absorbed into the ocean from the atmosphere has already begun to reduce calcification rates in reef-building and reef-associated organisms by altering seawater chemistry through decreases in pH. Since the late 18th century, the ocean has absorbed about 30% of the carbon humans have generated, decreasing its pH level. This process is called ocean acidification. Climate change will affect coral reef ecosystems, through sea level rise, changes to the frequency and intensity of tropical storms, and altered ocean circulation patterns. 

When combined, all of these impacts dramatically alter ecosystem function, as well as the goods and services coral reef ecosystems provide to people around the globe.

Climate change is also increasing the frequency and intensity of severe weather events. Coastal regions like the Great Barrier Reef are particularly exposed to damaging cyclones, flooding and storms. Between 2004 and 2018, 10 cyclones of category three or more crossed the Great Barrier Reef, causing significant damage to coral reefs.

Extreme weather conditions have caused approximately 25 miles of a section of the wall built during the Han dynasty to erode in recent years. Sandstorms have caused the bricks of packed earth to wear down, and, over time, “also cracked the wall and caused it to collapse or break down,” archaeologist Zhou Shengrui says.

Another section of the wall, which was considered the “crust of the cream” of the Ming dynasty, has suffered a 700-meter (or 2,300 feet) loss because of a network of underground mines in a secluded area of the Hebei province. Although the mines are not located directly beneath the wall, the nearby hollowed chambers beneath the earth are affecting the structure’s stability.

This is the reason why we decided to make the Great Wall of China with recycled materials as we think that it is crucial to bring light to the fact that even such a great wonder of the world can be affected by climate change with severe repercussions.

Additionally, archaeological data and evidence of climatic change are used to suggest that the collapse of Uxmal and Chichén Itzá in the Northern Maya Lowlands was the result of long and recurrent drought episodes in the eleventh century. Although environmental evidence indicates that drought episodes might have begun in the ninth century, they gradually increased in frequency through the eleventh century and generated devastating effects on the late Terminal Classic period civilization. 

Thus, it is easy to imagine how vulnerable this historical wonder of the world is today, with the entire world now facing the consequences brought about by global warming, various historical sites are currently facing threats with the Chichén Itzá being an example.
