According to my English Language Test, my weak point is listening and reading.Among these, listening comprehension is the area where I struggle the most. To improve my listening skill, I plan to use TED Talks which offers diverse topics, clear pronunciation and different speeds. Then i will memorize some vocabularies from reading passages and improve my reading speed appropriately. In my spare time,i can also watch some interesting films in English and accumulate some nice words and phrases.

In today's course, I made a small paper plane by following the craft video from YouTube. I think that it is very easy to make a paper plane.

My paper plane looks very cool with a long and straight body, two wings, and a tail. When I tried to let it fly, I found that the plane could only fly a short distance. It fell to the ground very quickly.

I thought for a while and suddenly realized that my plane is too light because it is made of a piece of paper. If I want it to fly for a long time, I must increase its overall weight. I assume that if I try adding a small paperclip to the nose of the plane, with the weight added properly, the flight time of the paper plane will become longer.

The first week of the English language course has been a journey of gradual adaptation, marking a shift from initial unease to growing confidence in keeping pace with the teacher’s words.

On the first day, I felt anxious for the reason that the teacher spoke entirely in English, with a speed which make me feel confused at first. I struggled to catch every word which left me feeling a little disconnected. Taking notes is also a challenge for me. To avoid always missing key points, i tried to write everything down.

However, as the days passed, something changed. As I gradually adapted, I started focusing more on listening for main ideas rather than focusing on the unfamiliar word. I also learned to write down some keywords instead of the whole sentences. Gradually, I noticed myself wanted to answer the teacher’s questions, even if my answers weren’t always perfect.

From feeling lost to staying in step is a small victory for me which make me feel more confident. I now understand that adaptation takes time. I should act like this every day so that I can make more progress.

Academically, task procrastination causes rushed work, lower quality assignments, and missed deadlines, hurting grades. Physically, late - night phone use disrupts sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, poor concentration, and long - term health risks. Emotionally, while phones offer temporary satisfaction, they fail to address root causes of stress, worsening anxiety and reducing overall well - being。

3.Why have you chosen this issue personally?

I have poor time management and procrastination habits, then stayed up late scrolling social media or playing games to Get emotional satisfaction. Seeing how it erodes productivity, health, and peace of mind made me eager to explore solutions and break this harmful pattern.

4.What specific aspect of this issue will you focus on in your project?

I’ll focus on the vicious cycle: How procrastination triggers late-night phone dependency, and its impact on students’ health. I’ll highlight:

Examples: Students delaying the daily homework, then watching short videos or playing games till dawn.

Problems: How phone use reinforces procrastination and damage students’ health.

Paragraph:

It seems we have been measured almost all of our lives. when we are infants, with our height and our weight, and as we grew it became our speed and our strength. And even in school there are test scores and today with our salaries and job performance. It seems as if those personal averages are almost always used to measure where we are in comparison to our peers. And I think we should look at that a little differently. That personal average is just that, it's something very personal and it's for you, and I think if you focus on that and work to build that, you can really start to accomplish some really amazing things.

Title: “To overcame challenges, stop comparing yourself to others”

Link: Dean Furness: To overcome challenges, stop comparing yourself to others | TED Talk

Part 1: Unity

Main idea: The paragraph emphasizes redefine personal measurement away from peer comparison and toward nurturing one’s own growth based on personal averages.

Topic sentence: “And I think we should look at that a little differently.”

Support for topic sentence: The sentences following the topic sentence :“And I think we should look at that a little differently” reinforce this central idea:They said that “personal average is just that, it's something very personal and it's for you” – emphasizing that metrics should be viewed as individual rather than comparative.

Part 2: Coherence

Transition/linking words: And,when,as,and today,It seems as if,And I think,that

Flow of ideas: Yes. First, it talks about something everyone goes through: how people are checked and measured all their lives. This shows that being measured all the time is a common thing. Then, it says these measurements are usually used to see how people stack up against others, explaining how we currently look at personal numbers. The phrase “And I think we should look at that a little differently” changes the focus to what the writer thinks. After that, it says “personal average” is something special to each person, not for comparing with others. In the end, it links focusing on your own personal average to doing great things, which shows why this new way of thinking is good.

Part 3: Reflection

What is one thing this writer did well? One thing the writer did well is clearly building a relatable context before introducing their new perspective.

What is one thing you can try in your next piece of writing?

One thing I can try in my next piece of writing is starting with relatable examples to build context before introducing my main argument.

My third week reflection

This week, I had several listening and note - taking activities. During the courses, the tutor was discussing the skills of reading and writing. I also participated in a group discussion about a case study where we listened to each other's viewpoints. When the tutor was presenting new concepts and when my classmates were sharing their ideas in the group discussion, I had to take notes.

When listening to the tutor, I sometimes felt confident in understanding the English, especially when the topic was familiar. However, when new and technical vocabulary was introduced, I felt a bit stressed. Regarding note - taking, I was often in a rush, which made me feel a bit stressed as I tried to write down as much as possible. In the group discussion, I felt more relaxed taking notes as the pace was slower compared to the videos.

Listening and note - taking felt easy when the tutor used visual aids like slides. The combination of the spoken words and the visual information made it clear what to focus on. Also, during the group discussion, it was easier because I could follow the conversation more easily. What made listening difficult was the speed at which the videos spoke. I like using abbreviations in my note which helped me write faster, but I found it hard to remember all the abbreviations later.

I seemed to understand more when I quickly skimmed through the relevant reading materials before the class. Visuals like slides and the whiteboard writings were very helpful as they gave me the abstracts about the main points. For note - taking, I usually just tried to write down everything I heard, which made my notes messy and hard to review.

I learned that preparing before class and having visual aids significantly help me listen and take notes more effectively. I also realized that I need to work on my note - taking strategy. The main challenge I need to overcome is finding a balance between listening and writing so that I don't miss important points while taking notes.

Next week, I will try to use the key - words note - taking method. Instead of writing down everything, I will focus on the key concepts and supporting details.
