In Germany, it is very important to be polite to people who are higher in the hierarchy. I was not really aware of this. I said too early ‘du’ against the chief of the department I worked at Wunderland Kalkar. This happens during the first days of my internship. The boss of the department I worked with introduced herself and asked me some questions. I introduced myself and said by accident: ‘Es Freut mich, dich kennenzulernen’, which means nice to meet you in English. Afterwards I heard of other colleagues that this is not normal and that I can better say ‘Sie’.
