Jazz influenced the 1920's a Women's Liberation Movement was furthered by jazz music, as it provided means of rebellion against set standards of society. The status of African Americans was elevated, due to the popularity of this distinctly African American music. For the first time in American history, what was previously considered "bottom culture" rose to the top and became a highly desired commodity in society.

"Shuffle Along" was the first all balck musical on Broadway. Created by Noble Sissle & Eubie Blake. It opened on Howard Theatre in Washington DC in late March 1921. Promoters and theatre managers were unsure if white audiences would accept the musical due to no black show ever being successful on Broadway in over 12 years. The plot centers on characters Sam and Steve who run for mayor in Jimtown, If either one wins, he will appoint the other his chief of police. Sam wins with the help of a crooked campaign manager. Sam keeps his promise to appoint Steve as chief of police.
https://vimeo.com/21251492
