In the language we use in school, it is beneficial to minimize the frequent use of "should".
"Should" is often offered in the form of advice; sometimes well-intentioned, sometimes manipulative. It places the values and perspective of what standardization and average to the student. As a better alternative, let’s listen to what students are saying and ask questions to help them explore the learning journey by giving more encouragement.

Example:
Use positive language:
"It would be beneficial if you could......"

Offer support:
Instead of: "You should try harder on this project."
We can say: "I believe your effort on this project can be improved, and I'm here to help you make it even better."

Offer choices:
Instead of: "You should work on the assignment now."
We can say: "You can choose to work on the assignment now or after the break."

As an EA, by reducing the reliance on "should", we can encourage critical thinking, allow students to make choices, and reduce unnecessary pressure.

A broken schools system asks for standard teachers and students. Everyone has to fit into the system. There are average, comparison, and competition because of the academic focused learning. Students did not fit in the standard and average who often felt struggle in school and their talent and creativity were ignored. We can shift our focus on embracing student's unique abilities.

Examples:
1. Create an non-academic focus learning environment that students can apply soft skills like communication, social skills and teamwork in a "sports team" together with other students. They can learn from each others' unique abilities and make achievement together.
2. We can sit aside by coaching student with problem solving skills and empathy. They can experiences the leadership through the team learning and be more independent.

The current school system has applied industrial factory style back in 200 years ago. Students were treated as products from the factory in the standard production that aimed to be reliable and safe to use. The standardization required every student fitting in regular curriculum with consistent performance and meeting the average. These students did not fit in the standard and average who often felt struggle in school and their talent and creativity were ignored. The education system needs to be changed to be inclusive by embracing student's unique abilities.

Be a growth mindset educator in the inclusive classroom, by changing our language if all we did was taking out the “should!” What if we change our question from “Where should you be? What's wrong with you?” to “Where are you now, and what is your next step?” and let go of average, comparison, competition, and expectation. The children
need to be someone who they are but are not factory products.

Growth Mindset for Educator
As an educator, feelings of empowerment to positivity influence students and learning community (inclusive classroom) to minimize the frequent use of "should". The word of "should" comes with the negative reflection in relation to "I said or did something wrong??", therefore I receive an advice of “you should…”

Examples of positive influence in the classroom:
1. Respect students' opinion, not starting with “you should”
- To encourage their participation, pose questions and ask them to express their ideas. This strategy allows for lifelong learning and brings diversity to the table.
2. Teach student that it is okay to make mistakes -
Avoid saying " you should do it in this way?"
- This significantly interferes with their growth and learning by limiting their new experiences. Instead, show appreciation to the effort and engage student looking into different angles for improvement. The mistake could be fine-tuned to a better idea.
