Advert: Inspiration and Synergy

My main inspiration for my advert was Rihanna's 'Loud' advert. I was influenced a lot by her font and continued to use the same font sans serif capitalised font throughout my advert and website. A strong convention of magazine adverts is that they present some type of synergy that links to the artist and the music video. For my digipak image I decided to use an image of the artist that strongly reflects the synergy for our artists which was her eye-make-up. However, through production we also decided to use pink as a heavy colour throughout to help recognise the artist which is why pink is a constant colour used throughout my ancillary and edited in the video. So the repetitive use of pink throughout the video, the advert and the website makes a recognisable colour for the artist.

Another convention I have followed with my magazine advert is making the artist's name the largest piece of text on the advert and digipak. On Lana Del Rey's, 'Born to Die' advert her name is the largest font size throughout the advert. On my advert 'TINA' is the biggest text on the digipak cover and although it's a different font weight as the text on the advert, it is still the largest font size. Another convention I have followed is by keeping a strong colour scheme throughout that follows the colour scheme used for other media products related to the artist. Here for Lana Del Rey's 'Born to Die' she uses blue and white throughout the image used as well as the text. For my products I have strongly used a light pink through as the background colour for my media products, followed with white text across my products. In the music video, I also edited using pink hues to follow the pink theme. This gives the artist another feature to be recognised by.

Forms and conventions are the expectations and 'rules' music videos and other media products follow. Conventions change dependent on what media product or genre for example in a rap video you would expect to see the artist wearing a lot of expensive clothing like gold chains. Whilst in a pop video, it would be more expected to see a lot of bright colours and dancing.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory discusses how music videos don't follow usual narratives and present visuals from a different angle. Goodwin believes that there are three structures that music videos follow in terms of creating a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The three types of structures in music videos are illustrative, amplification and disjuncture. Illustrative videos tell the story behind the lyrics through the visuals, amplified videos exaggerate and sometimes add to the meanings behind the lyrics through the visuals and disjuncture videos lack a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals or show an opposition to what the lyrics mean. These structures are considered conventions for music videos as they help explain the layouts of music videos.

Our music video has a disjuncture structure as our visuals don't relate to the lyrics so there is a lack of relationship between the two. An example of another disjuncture video is Jessie J's 'Price Tag' music video where she sings the lyrics "It's not about the money' but she is stood underneath a money tree and rubs her hands together as a gesture of 'getting money'.

Carol Vernallis - Base Tracks

Carol Vernallis studied the camerawork and editing of music videos to understand how they were edited discontinuously to connect rhythmically with the song. Vernallis noticed that music videos use base tracks (master shots). I used at least 10 base tracks in my music video to make sure that I had enough footage and there was a fair amount of base tracks for each location. Using base tracks makes editing a lot easier and will give the audience some familiarity as they are brought back to the same shot several times throughout the video. This also provides the music video with structure when the feeling of familiarity is developed.

Dua Lipa's music video for her single 'New Rules' is a good example for where a base track is used. At the start of the song she is seen in a hotel room and returns to the same location later on in the video after changing location once. This gives the viewer a sense of familiarity as they recognise the shot.

Another convention, I included in my music video was the use of close ups. My music video consisted of a lot of close-ups. This is common within music videos as close ups are used as a way of promoting and marketing the artist. Using close-ups visually presents the artist's face so that their audience becomes more familiar with them and can begin to recognise them, this also clearly notes them as the artist of the song.

Camera movement is a major convention of music videos as music videos aren't expected to be still. By using camera movement the viewer is taken through the video and engages with it more as the video isn't still so there is more movement to follow on screen. I used a lot of tracking in my music video and swoop shots to bring the viewer into individual shots and they feel as though they are following the artist. I took inspiration for the swoop shots from the original music video as I feel the viewer follows the movement and focuses on the artist as that's what the camera follows.

One convention I have followed with my website is giving it a very structured layout. I did this by blocking out each section of the website and seperating each page by different links. I also gave the website a strict colour scheme by using pink, white and black which are three colours used across both of my ancillary texts. I used a colour scheme that works well together so that the website flows and doesn't contrast too much. I took inspiration from Anne Marie's website where she blocked out her website used a purple colour and black which work well together and doesn't contrast with each other.

Another convention I have followed with my artist's website is by creating a newsletter. A newsletter is used by an artist as a way of marketing themselves regularly by keeping fans up to date with releases of new music and tour dates etc.. I looked at the layout of Ed Sheeran's newsletter sign up page for inspiration for my newsletter as he simply blocks in into part of the homepage so that it is easily seen. I blocked out my newsletter using the same colour scheme as the rest of my website so that it worked well with other aspects of the site. When someone signs up to my website, they receive an automatic email from the artist thanking them for subscribing to the newsletter. This gives a personal touch as the reader feels as they have been acknowledged by the artist and this promotes the artist as it lets fans know that the artist is wanting to keep their fans involved in any news.

Carol Vernallis - Obvious Edits

Vernallis found that music videos also often include a lot of obvious edits. These draw attention to the actual edit of the video making them 'obvious', these can include special effects, slow-motion and exaggerated transitions. I took inspiration for using obvious edits in my music from Demi Lovato's 'Sorry Not Sorry' music video. Slow-motion is used heavily throughout her video from the very first shot and throughout. The music video also includes some bright flashing editing lights several times throughout the video that move across the screen very quickly. I used examples of both these techniques in my music video by slowing down several shots throughout my video between lip-syncing to add shots that didn't consist of singing and also exaggerate the beat of the song to mach with a cut of editing.
