I chose the Mongol Empire because of its powerful military strategies and ability to adapt to different environments. My digital design shows how the Mongols defended their vast territory using highly mobile horsemen, intelligence networks, and a system of relay stations (Yam) for fast communication. Although they didn’t rely on walls or forts like other empires, their speed, discipline, and surprise tactics made them almost impossible to defeat. In my creative twist, I imagined a futuristic drone attack, and the Mongols responded by using trained eagles to intercept drones and setting up mobile signal jammers carried on horseback. Their flexibility, organization, and use of innovative tactics helped them become one of the largest and most feared empires in history.

The Byzantine armies were perhaps the greatest ever in the world, especially in naval warfare, where they employed a secret weapon known as Greek fire. Sitting astride the channel between Europe and Asia, the empire owed its wealth to trade. Over the centuries, it contended with numerous enemies: the Persian Empire, the Arab Caliphates, the Seljuk and Ottoman Turks, and the Crusaders themselves, especially during the sack of Constantinople in 1204. To deal with these enemies, the Byzantines used strong fortifications, innovative weaponry, and diplomacy, agreements, and an overhaul of the military system called the theme system. Against far-fetched threats, one can imagine buoyed underwater ship traps in the Bosporus, spy merchants, or birds carrying tiny incendiaries—very crude scales for drones.
