Supercilious - behaving or looking as though one thinks one is superior to others.

Colors
While i was reading the first chapter of The Great Gatsby i noticed that the color red was being mentioned repeatedly. I think that the color red symbolizes power and strengthens well as love and danger. I also noticed that the color white seemed to be a recurring color. I feel as though the color white represents new beginnings and purity. Lastly another color that kept appearing is the color gold. The color gold could be representing power and wealth.

Tom Buchanan and my response to the character:
“Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shinings, arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.” (Fitzgerald page 6). 
From the begging we know that Tom was given advantages that not most people get. In the second paragraph of chapter one we are told that he is an amazing football player. I don’t want to stereotype football players but they tend to let the fame get to them and they become “supercilious”, one might even say they become arrogant and mean. We are also told that Tom is very wealthy, wealthy people also tend to be supercilious. As I kept reading chapter one it seemed to me like i was right, Tom can be seen as mean, one might even say that he’s dangerous. Throughout the chapter i was proven right because Tom is proven to be dangerous.
