As I read "Farewell to Manzanar", I think the theme that fits this article would be, family is a powerful force that can overcome challenges. Throughout the course of this article the family tries to stay together and work together as they enter the internment camps. In the text it states, "Mama and my older brothers had succeeded in keeping most of us together, on the same bus, headed for the same camp"(Houston). This explains how their mother tried to keep them together. Most of the families were not as fortunate. The text also states, "Our two rooms were crowded, but at least it was our family"(Houston). This is showing that they are grateful they're at least able to be with their family.

In the beginning of this article, the Japanese American family arrives at the internment camps. In the texts it states "But inside the bus no one stirred. No one waved or spoke"(Houston). This is an example of a scared and anxious tone that is represented by the young boy. This tone is continued in the rest of the paragraph by explaining that everyone was being silent and not moving. In the last chapter, they're learning how to get along and work together with the other family's. In the text it states, "Happily, gratefully, Mama bowed again and said ,"Arigato" (Thank you) "Arigato gozaimas" (Thank you so much)(Houston). This is showing an example of repetition because she is saying thank you multiple times and showing her gratitude by repeating it.

The authors purpose of writing this article was to inform people about what it was like for the Japanese Americans in the internment camps. In the perspective of the youngest child in the family, he explains how he felt and how it was for him and him family. This article also was to show that these families had everything taken from them.

As I read "Farewell to Manzanar", the thing that stood out to me was how people were discriminated against one another because of the race that they were. When I was looking for current internment camps used to this day. In 2017 china opened an internment camp. This camp took in different ethnic groups and became a mass detention. The text states, "They reinforce allegations that the camps are part of a nationwide policy to promote conformity to Communist Party doctrine and majority Han cultural norms and crack down on expressions of cultural, political and religious diversity"(Alecci). This internment camp was not necessarily to discriminate against race but more discriminating over religion and politics. The source I used is https://www.icij.org/investigations/china-cables/xinjiang-police-files-uyghur-mugshots-detention/.

This event does not affect my life currently. I do know many Americans and many people that aren't Americans struggle with discrimination daily. Being discriminated affects the quality of life and the ability to live freely.

In this article "Farewell to Manzanar", the author was showing what happened in the internment camps. I believe it is not fair to separate people from other people due to discrimination. To solve this problem people could do peaceful protests and talk about the horrible living conditions these camps cause.
