The land in the Carolinas consisted of coastal plains, mountain ranges, and plateaus. The climate was very warm and humid during the summer and cooler in the winter, but winters were still humid which made it easy for disease to spread and thrive. Farming and agriculture were extremely important because of the vast farmland which made agriculture a primary industry.

Slavery played an important role in the development of the Carolina colony. (Split into North Carolina and South Carolina 1729.) As early as 1708, slaves outnumbered whites and by 1730 there were twice as many slaves as whites in the colony. About a third of South Carolina's slaves during the early eighteenth century were Indians. In 1711 Tuscaroras destroyed New Bern. Over the next two years, the colonial militia, assisted by the Yamassees, killed or enslaved a fifth of the Tuscaroras. In 1715, the Yamassees allied themselves with the Creeks and attempted to destroy the colony. North Carolina was the scene of some of the most bitter Indian-white warfare.
