At the moment, I find Josef's story the most captivating at entertaining because in just these few chapters so much has happened, especially for him. His house was invaded and destroyed, his father was taken, they were told to leave Germany in 14 days or face the consequences. And after all of this, his dad is released, but when they get him, he's extremely scared and paranoid, as if all this wasn't a lot, Josef was taken into the Hitler's Youth cabin and had put him and his family into grave danger, but, luckily for him, he was simply left off with a warning.

At this point in the novel, the most captivating story in my opinion is Josef's story. This is because so much is happening with Josef's father acting strange, Josef's bar mitzvah, and much more. Josef's father is extrmley convinced that the boat was a trap and that they wouldn't make it to Cuba safely. However, Josef was thinking of his future and how he was a man now. This really enhanced the plot of the story because the reader isn't sure what to believe and many things to support both of these thoughts keep happening.

This is because, it was entertaining and exciting to see his adventures that he faced as he and his rode various vehicles just to be able to get out of Germany and meet his father. Other than that he also created troubles for his family as he got caught and was lucky to not be kicked out of the train they were riding to meet with his father. Similarly, I was also relived that Joseph was treated fairly once he rode the boat with his family because they were treated like normal people even though they were Jewish.

Josef has had his father get taken away, been forced to move and had to do so much more and that's what makes his adventure so interesting.

In my opinion, Josef's story was very captivating and entertaining because he has the most interesting adventure. For example it was very captivating when Josef's house got destroyed by the Nazis and his father got taken away and sent to a concentration camp. Another example, that was very interesting is when Josef went into the German part of the train while trying to get a piece of candy for his sister. This is interesting because Josef was very lucky not to get kicked off the train. It was also very strange and different that Josef, his sister, his mother and paranoid father (he was paranoid because he just got sent back from the concentration camp) were getting treated like real Germans on the ship while trying to get out of Germany. I am also very curious about what different problems Josef and his family are going to face once they get off the ship and in the rest of the story.

One big one is Josef's Father acting strange. This is because the father came out of concentration Camp which made him weak and scared of most of the things that is going on around him. At the end of Josef's chapter, there is a question that will be stuck in your head until you read the next chapter. It is very unique and has a lot of feelings. Josef's keep thinking and keeps questioning himself. It feels like the journey never ends.

Jude explains that the people who normally stroll down this beach have lived in Syria for quite a while, or don't have an abundance of money. She then goes on to explain how Issa has recently started talking about democracy and the essential changes that need to be made such as the fact that the president of Syria can't continue oppressing his people any longer , she talks about how Issa has been attending meetings with several people to discuss revolution, and how that is causing commotion within the family since their father doesn't approve of what Issa is planning.

I also want to know how her life will be after she escapes. Alan Gratz wrote Isabel's story in a way that keeps the reader wondering will she find a way to escape or will Castro change his mind it makes the reader wonder and so do the others. Isabel's also stood out to me because of how they thought of the plan to go with the Castillo's and how they brought Luis and his girlfriend to escape with them. All three of them are honestly very interesting and it was hard to choose.

In chapter 2, Jude states that "Our city does not look like what they put on TV about Syria. I remember the first time Fatima and I saw a story about Aleppo on the news. We felt proud." This proves that she is proud of Syria even if she is not in the more beautiful cities. She is proud to live in Syria. Then, in chapter 6, Issa says "Things are going to change". He is speaking to Jude, and he means things are going to change for the better. Jude's response is "My feet sink into the sand. I realize I do not want things to change. I want things to go back to how they were, which I guess is another sort of changing, but not what Issa is talking about." This shows that Jude does not want things to change from how they were. She is enjoying things now, and she wants it to stay that way. In conclusion, Jude is proud of living in Syria, and does not want it to change.

I find Joseph's story most captivating, mainly because of his father. Aaron Landau used to sound like an amazing dad, but after going to that hideous concentration camp, his dad has quite literally lost his soul. Everyday, seeing person after person tortured and killed right in front of you, and you aren't able to make a peep. If you so much as twitch, you would be next. Imagine seeing a friend of yours upside down, head in a water-filled barrel, drowning right in front of your eyes, and you couldn't do anything. His father had scared both Joseph and his sister, and his father trying to commit suicide just deepened the gap between Joseph and his father.

A piece of evidence to prove this is when Jude says, "I do, I say, but what I mean is that I care about my brother and my baba and my mama and I just want to live in a country where we can all have dinner again without shouting about our president or rebels and revolution." (Warga, page #11.) I also think Nya is more stable like she has more money she even has 2 houses one near water and one not near, so in conclusion, I would rather be Nya because its more stable.

Each character has to taker on a responsibility that is not their. Isabelle for one, sold the most precious object (her trumpet) she owns for gasoline so that her family and her can leave Cuba all together by boat. In this moment, she acted like an adult and gave up the only thing she had for her family. Likewise, Mahmood has a sharp personality and doesn't want to be too social so he can be un-noticed. He helps his family find shelter in turkey and he acts like an adult because of his actions, essentially, keeping his family safe from all dangers. Joseph although, put his family in a little bit of danger with the encounter of the Hitler Youth, but, he felt extremely scared and so, he was ready to do anything for his family. For this, in the story, he too can be considered to act like an adult because although at times he acts a bit kiddish, he would do anything for his family, this shows a lot of passion between him and his family.

Joseph has a very curious and adventurous personality, which isn't necessarily a good thing. We saw that on the train/metro, his curiosity attracted the attention of the Hitler Youth. Joseph has to take charge and act like a grown up when his father is scared and sweaty during the medical examination on the boat. He slaps his father in order to try and talk some sense into him. He feels horrible for doing this, but deep down, he knows it was the right thing to do. "Suddenly, Josef saw what he had to do. He slapped his father across the face. Hard. Papa staggered in surprise, and Josef felt just as shocked as his father looked. Josef couldn’t believe what he’d just done." (Page 70)

Isabel doesn't have one set personality. At times she is happy, and others she is sad. Her personality seems to differ at many times, but something consistent is the love for music and her family. She is extremely passionate about her family and is very selfless. She has to act like a grown up when she decides to dive in after Señor Castillo after remembering when she lost her grandma the same exact way. "In a flash, Isabel remembered her grandmother disappearing under the waves just like that
two years ago, and without another thought, Isabel dove in after Señor Castillo." (Page 64)

Mahmoud has a very scared, yet sympathetic personality. He cares more about his family than himself. This trait is something only an adult might have, and this trait shows how Mahmoud has to act like an adult when he saves his brother, sister, and father, but sacrifices himself. He even gives his mother a working life jacket and leaves himself in the water. "“At least take my sister!” Mahmoud begged. “She’s a baby. She won’t take up any room!” That caused much yelling and discussion on the boat. A man tried to pry Mahmoud loose again, but he hung on. “Please ... ” Mahmoud begged." The figurative language for this quote is personification because in this quote it says the shadow threw him to the floor, but shadows can't physically throw a human. The other example of figurative language is "Mahmoud Bishara was invisible" (Gratz pg 14). Because he isn't really invisible, but he tries to not be noticed, in the book, you might think he's invisible but he isn't actually invisible.

2. (Gratz 11) "[...] Its tummy purred like an outboard motor..." In this quote specifically, "Isabel's" cat is hungry, as is everyone in Cuba. This quote talks about how hungry the cat was and how happy it was to finally eat something. (Warga, Page 24). This is an example of a simile because Jude is comparing the humidity of the air with someone else's mouth; doing this with the word 'like'. The second example is "The snake of fear uncoils in my stomach." This is an example of symbolism. The snake uncoiling symbolizes that her stomach feels uneasy, which is usually associated with feeling scared or nervous. Because Jude describes the snake as a snake of fear, she is implying that she is scared.

Mahmoud learned that being invisible wasn't the correct way to deal with things because it harmed Mahmoud and his family. The 3 words that the book relates to are: struggle, sacrifice and relief. They struggled because in order to finish where they were they faced a lot of challenges and roadblocks making their final destination sound unrealistic. Sacrifice because throughout all three journeys many sacrifices were made. For example, while Mahmoud's family was drowning, they gave away Hana in order for her to survive. Relief because towards the end of their journeys there was a sense of relief because they never thought they would make it.

At the end of the novel, Mahmood learns that there are times to stand up for himself and other times, being invisible can keep you alive. At the beginning, he was trying to be invisible but during the time of the story, he tries out his power and finds that it can help in some situations. In the end he sacrifices his life for Ruthie and, we're almost sure, even if he could go back and save himself, he wouldn't. Three words we choose that we think best connect to Refugee are: Hope, Empathy and Survival. Hope best connects to the novel because when Isabel was in the little raft and her mother was pregnant, Isabel was her mother's last hope for life in America and for her son to be born in America. During Isabel's story, empathy was shown because when the two families were in the raft, both of them were sharing many thoughts on the, boat imagining their life in EL Norte. They all expressed their feelings and emotions on a much more deep level. Survival well expresses itself in Mahmood's story. When they were in the taxi and the taxi driver pointed the gun at them, it was a pure moment of survival: of life or death.

And on Pg. 10 Salva states that "What are they going to do to us? Where is my family?" And , another motif can also be seen Pg. 11 where it states that "If I die now, I will never see my family again." Lastly, the motif seen in A Long Walk To Water is depicted about Salva being extremely worried about not finding his family.

The theme of "Other Words for Home" are determination, acceptance, and family. In the end of the book it proves this because, on pg 330, "It feels like a hidden charm that will give me courage." This proves that the theme has determination because she has bravery inside her. Another quote from the book Other Words From Home writes in pg 330 "Uncle Mazin insists that he can watch the baby, but both Aunt Michelle ignore him. I have never seen them so in sync." This proves that the theme is also about family. "She has french braided my hair underneath my hijab. No one else will see it, but it helps me feel in character."
(page #330) This quote proves the theme acceptance because it shows that even if Jude is wearing a hijab she will still do her hair and not care about what others think about her just because she's wearing a hijab.

In the beginning of the story Mahmoud just saw himself as being "invisible" and lonely. The 3 phrases that I think would relate to the theme is: be patient with yourself, always keep trying, and believe in yourself! I think the phrase "be patient with yourself" matches Mahmoud the most because in the beginning of the book he didn't really take care of himself. Like he wouldn't care if people made fun of him, and he would always see himself as the invisible, lonely kid. The same goes for "always keep trying", and "believe in yourself" because he was a careless kid. But then slowly he learned to keep trying, and never give up!!

Ha stays close to her family after moving to the US, except when she goes to school. She stays with them because they are like her. The three words that go with this theme are safe, family, and hope. For example, to stay safe, Ha stays with her family the most of the time for her comfort level. In relation to her family, they make feel safe and give some feelings of being normal. Ha remains hopeful that one day she'll see her father and Vietnam again. this hope keeps going.

-Kassem Kevin Hejeij

We think that at the end of the book, Jude learns that change is not always a bad thing. This is because Jude has lived in Syria her whole life, and surprisingly, her mom got pregnant and they had to move to the US. That was a major change in Jude's life because she lost many things. For example, she could not see her dad and her best friend. Three words that would relate to this book are perseverance, change, and family. This is because Jude and her mom persevere and move to the US and Jude's life changes since she goes to a very different school and sees as well as experiences many different things that she did not see in Syria. Family is because Jude and her family has gone through many changes and been through many experiences while being in Syria and moving to America. Thus, three words to describe the theme of Other Words for Home are perseverance, change, and family and the theme of the book was that change is not always a bad thing.

The words we would pick for the theme would be, brave, perseverance, and family. I think this because first, Salva's family was the only thing keeping him motivated when he was lost. "Each time, Salva would think of his family and his village, and he was somehow able to keep his wounded feet moving forward, one step at a time." (Parker, 54). This quote shows that whenever Salva felt like giving up, thinking about his family kept him going. I also chose perseverance because he kept going and going no matter how tired, hungry, or thirsty he was. He kept going until he could finally meet his dad all over again. I also chose bravery, because Salva made a brave choice that impacted others a lot, he told them "I will take us to Kenya," (Parker, 81). This was a very brave choice because he knew that he had to take care and bring over 1,500 boys all the way from Ethiopia to Kenya.

Three words or phrases that would relate to the theme would be perseverance, bravery, and patients. I choose these 3 words because perseverance is when you keep trying and Salva keep trying to find his real family. This is proven when the author writes "Salva immediately began planning to travel to Sudan." (Park Pg 101). I choose bravery because Salva was brave enough to swim in a lake that has crocodiles. Mahmoud pretty much rethinks his entire way of living, and goes from trying to blend in, to trying to stand out. 3 words/phrases that relate to Refugee (in my opinion) are family, perseverance, and responsibility. I chose family, because Mahmoud, Isabel, and Joseph all care about their families A LOT, and they would probably sacrifice themselves in order to save them. I think that perseverance also played a big part in Refugee, because Mahmoud, Isabel, and Joseph had to keep on pushing in their journeys. They couldn't give up, because they all knew that the only way they would survive is through pure drive. Finally, I believe that responsibility was evident in Refugee, because Mahmoud, Isabel, and Joseph were all taking on many responsibilities. They were the leader in their groups, and were helping their families survive. Thank you for reading, and have a good day.

The life lesson that Jude learns is that it is important to be patient to be accepted by others and oneself. Jude learned this
due to the fact that many of the kids in her school didn't accept her because she was not an American, and that caused Jude to feel out of place.

1. "Be brave"
We chose this word to relate to the theme because Issa said these words to Jude when she felt nervous or scared. As a result, Jude would be reminded of these words when she was in America and that motivated her to believe in herself which allowed her to accept her own personality and become more confident.

2. "Patience is a virtue"
This phrase relates to the theme because Jude had to be patient in order to orient herself with the way things were in America.

3. Acceptance
This word relates to the theme because Jude had a hard time being accepted by her class mates due to the fact that many people thought she was slightly dangerous since she was a muslim. Jude also had a hard time accepting herself since she felt out of place, and many people didn't communicate with her.

I believe a life lesson Jude learns throughout and by the end of the book is accepting change. Throughout the book, Jude must face many changes in her life that she must learn to live with--from moving away from her home to a completely new environment, enrolling in a new school, and much, much more. Throughout the book, Judy is seen to grow as a person and eventually accepting the change in her life as a positive. I think three words that would relate to the theme of Other Words For Home are acceptance, adaptation, and being able to handle changes in your life.
