Ponyboy Curtis

Ponyboy Curtis is the youngest of the Greaser group, age 14, and he's the narrator of the book. He has light brown hair, longer than most boys wear it, and his eyes are greenish-grey. He moved up in grade school because he's smart, so now he's in high school in all the "A" classes. He doesn't like watching movies with other people and no one likes books and movies more than him. Ponyboy's parents died in a car accident, so now he lives with his oldest brother Darrel (Darry) and his older brother Sodapop (Soda). Soda is the one person that Pony looks up to and he loves him more than he's ever loved anyone. Ponyboy and Sodapop try their best to stay out of trouble. Ponyboy's name is unique but he likes it. He never likes to cry in front of Darry because him and Darry just don't get along. If Ponyboy comes home with B's in school, Darry wants A's. If he comes home with A's, Darry wants to make sure they stay A's. Ponyboy can never please Darry. Ponyboy isn'tlike most Gresers, him and Johnny are a little bit more like gentlemen. For example, when they went to the move with Dally, Dally was bugging those two girls (Sheri/Cherry and Marcia), but then Johnny and Ponyboy went over and told him to stop. After that, the girls actually wanted to stay with them because they weren't mean or dirty. This shows that Ponyboy is a nice kid.

Sodapop Curtis is the middle child in the Curtis family, at the age of 16, turning 17. He has dark gold hair that he combs back and dark brown eyes. In the summer sun, his long, straight and silky hair bleaches to a shinning wheat gold. He's a high school dropout because he thinks he's dumb.
He never reads, but he tries to understand why Ponyboy likes to read. Sodapop is different from other people, for example he almost understands everything about Ponyboy. He never yells at Ponyboy like his older brother Darry does, and he doesn't treat Ponyboy any different just because he's the youngest. Soda is always happy-go-lucky and always grinning, and he'll never really grow up. He works at a gas station called DX with his best friend Steve Randle and he tries his best to keep himself and Ponyboy out of trouble. Though Soda ad Steve do get into a lot of fights, it's because they have so much energy and nothing to do with it. Sodapop's movie star handsome and Ponyboy loves Soda more than he's ever loved anyone, which proves that Sodapop Curtis is almost like Ponyboy's idol and he's a good person. Soda has his dad's eyes but he's one of a kind. He never drinks alcohol when everyone else does because he doesn't feel the need to. Ponyboy says that Soda gets drunk on just plain living. Sodapop is also very helpful, for example he helps Darry by giving him back rubs because Darry works too hard. He is also very trusting, for example, he told Ponyboy that he wants to marry Sandy, trusting that Ponyboy wouldn't tell Darry. Eeveryone loves Sodapop Curtis.

Darrel Curtis is the oldest of the Curtis brothers, at age 20, and he's been in charge of taking care of Soda and Pony ever since their parents died. Darry has dark brown hair that kicks out in the front with a cowlick in the back (just like his dad's) and his eyes are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice. His eyes are just cold. He's 6 feet and 2 inches, and he's broad-shouldered and muscular. He looks older than 20 and he looks smart, cool and tough. He always apologizes to Ponyboy but Pony thinks he's never really sorry for anything that he does. He looks exactly like his father used to look, but he acts the opposite of his dad. Darry is always working too much and he's always pulling muscles in his back. His job is to roof houses and he always carries two roofing bundles up the ladder. Sodapop always ends up rubbing his back because Darry is always in pain. When he was in high school, Darry was a popular guy, captain of the football team and voted "Boy Of The Year", but even with the scholarship he received, their family didn't have enough money to afford to send Darry to college. Darrel is always so serious about everything and he works all the time just so he can support his family. He cares a lot about his brothers and he kind of likes getting teased by Sodapop. Darry's a determined and Hard-working guy.

Keith (Two-Bit) Mathews

Keith Mathews got his nickname (Two-Bit) because you can never shut him up and he always has to get his two-bits worth in. Two-Bit is the oldest of the Greaser group, 6 feet tall and a stocky build. He has rusty colored hair, long sideburns, grey eyes and a wide grin. Life is one big joke to Two-Bit and he couldn't stop making funny remarks to save his life. No one ever called him Keith, even his teachers. He just goes by Two-Bit. He's known for shoplifting and his black-handled switch blade (which he stole), and he was always being a smart alack t the cops. He can't help but to always make jokes, even to the cops, and everything he says is so funny that he thinks the cops should get in on his humor. Two-Bit is always getting in fights, he loves fights, and he also likes blondes. School is another thing Two-Bit likes, but he never learns anything, he just goes for the laughs. Two-Bit is always drinking and smoking just for the fun of it, but all the Greasers smoke, except for Sodapop. Two-Bit loves to shoplift even though he doesn't need any of the stuff he takes, he just thinks it's fun to grab whatever's just sitting there. Two-Bit liked to scare his friends, for example, when Johnny and Ponyboy were at the movies with Cherry and Marcia, Two-Bit came up behind them and scared them. You can never tell when Two-Bit is drunk or not because sometimes he acts drunk even when he's sober. Because Two-Bit is the oldest, he likes to lecture the younger ones about girls, for example he lectured Johnny and Ponyboy about girls when they picked up girls downtown. Two-Bit has a very good sense of humor.

Dallas Winston is the real character of the group. He had an elfish face, with high cheekbones and a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. Dally'ss hair was so blonde that it was almost white and he didn't like haircuts or hair oil so his hair falls in wisps over his forehead and kicked out in tufts and curled behind his ears. His eyes were ice cold blue filled with hatred for the whole world. Dally isn't much of a gentleman, he just hits on girls and keeps going after them and bugging them. Dally's just a dirty guy and goes from girl to girl. Dally's the toughest, meanest and coldest of the group and he had been arrested by the age of 10. He had quite a reputation. They have a file on him down at the police station. He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids, he did everything. Ponyboy doesn't like him, but Dally is smart and you have to respect him. Dally wears a special ring (one he rolled a drunk senior to get) when he breaks up with his girlfriend Sylvia.Dally loves to break the law and hates to do things the legal way. He constantly gets arrested and he's always shoplifting. Dally is a dare-devil.

Johnny Cade

Johnny Cade is the second youngest of the group at age 16. He's been very jumpy ever since the Socs jumped him and beat him up real bad. After that incident, Johnny was scared of everything, even his own shadow. He's the smallest in the group, with a slight build. He's the human version of a little dark puppy that's been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers. He gets beaten by his father at home and his parents are always fighting. Johnny has big black eyes and a dark tanned face. His hair is jet-black, greasy and combed to the side. His hair is so long that it falls into shaggy bangs across his forehead. He always had a nervous and suspicious look in his eyes. Since he's the smallest, Johnny is kind of like the group's pet and everyone's kid brother. He has it rough at home and he would have runaway so many times if it wasn't for the love he gets from his friends. Johnny smokes just like the rest of the greasers. He doesn't talk much and he's never really sassy or sarcastic but he comes around sometimes and surprises everyone when he speaks. For example, when they were at the movie with Cherry and Marcia, Johnny told Dally to stop bugging the girls and he actually spoke up for once and it was to Dally of all people, no one talks back to Dally. But Dally listened to him because he was proud of Johnny for being a bit sassy and sarcastic and for speaking up for the girls. Johnny is an innocent kind of kid and a gentleman.

Steve Randle is Sodapop's best friend. They work together at a gas station called DX. He's 17 years old and he was tall and lean. He has thick greasy hair he keeps combed in complicated swirls. Steve is tacky and smart and his specialty is cars. He knows cars upside down and backwards and he can drive anything with wheels. The gas station the Soda and Steve work at gets the most customers of all gas stations. This could be because Steve is so good with cars, or because Sodapop attracts girls very easily. Steve doesn't like Ponyboy because he thinks Ponyboy is a tag-along kid just because he always hangs out with Soda and Steve. But that's not Ponyboy's fault because he never asks Sodapop if he can go with them, Soda asks Ponyboy so he just says sure. Steve is always getting into fights and participating in rag races wit his best friend Soda. Steve is always giving dirty looks to Ponyboy because he just sees Pony as Sodapop's kid broher. Steve has a hatred for his father. Sodapop and Steve have been best friends since grade school and thet never fight with each other. Steve is a good friend to Sodapop, but not so much to Ponyboy.

We don't know much about Cherry yet but we have learnt a bit. Sherri Valance goes by Cherry because of her red hair. Cherry is a cheerleader at Ponyboy's high school. Sherri stands up for her principals, for example, when Dally was talking dirty to her and hitting on her at the movies, she kept saying no and telling him to leave her alone. She also said that she wouldn't drink a coke if it came from him, and when he brought her and Marcia cokes, Marcia drank hers but Cherry didn't. She talks in sarcasm, for example when Two-Bit showed up at the movie they had a sarcastic conversation. Cherry and her friend Marcia don't smoke. She's a good listener, for example when Ponyboy was telling the long story about when Johnny got jumped by the Socs, she was listening the whole time. Cherry is a Caring girl.

When they got to the park, the blue mustang came around again with Bob, Randy and their friends (those were the same guys that had beaten Johnny bad with their rings). The Socs got out and attacked Ponyboy and Johnny. They grabbed Pony and dunked his head in the fountain, and held it there almost drowning him.

In chapter five Ponyboy woke up the morning after they slept in the church and almost forgot where he was until the memories came back to him. Johnny wasn't there when Ponyboy woke up, but then he found a letter written in the dust on the ground that said "Went to get supplies. Be back soon. J.C.", so he just waited for Johnny to come back.

We learn that the Greasers way of saying who's there is by whistling low then ending in a high note.

Johnny did the special whistle when he came back from the store and showed Ponyboy what was in the bag. Ponyboy starts talking about the movies and fun stuff that happened just the night before but he makes Johnny remember that he had killed a guy the same night so Johnny yells at Ponyboy to stop talking about that night. Dally then explains that he sent the cops to Texas to look for them so they will be safe and that there's a big war between the Socs and the Greasers now. Dally takes the boys to Dairy Queen to eat, and they eat a lot, and really fast. He also tells them that they have a spy from the Socials, Cherry Valance.

QUESTIONS

Why is Cherry helping the Greasers even when it was her boyfriend that Johnny killed?

Will there be consequences for Dally when the police realize they can't find Johnny and Ponyboy in Texas?

In chapter six Ponyboy and Johnny tell Dally that they're going to turn themselves in. Dally starts to drive them home, but on their way home, Dally notices that the church is on fire, and they decide that they need to go back and see what's happening. Johnny and Ponyboy think that it was their fault because they may have dropped a lit cigarette.

Being the guilty and brave boys that they are, Ponyboy and Johnny ran into the burning building to save the children who were still in there. Unfortunately, the cinders and embers started falling in the church and one landed on Johnny's back after they had gotten everyone else out of the building, Ponyboy had escaped the church, Dally had gone in and grabbed Johnny, and they were all rushed to the hospital in ambulances.

Ponyboy was okay, so he was sitting in the waiting room, waiting to see if he would be allowed to see Dally and Johnny. While he was in the waiting room, Jerry Wood, the teacher who had stayed with Ponyboy at the hospital thanking him for saving his students, had said there were people her to see him. It was Sodapop and Darry. Ponyboy was so excited he ran right for Soda and hugged him. Then he looked at Darry and he was crying because he felt so bad about everything he did to Ponyboy, but they made up and hugged it out. Ponyboy was worried, he hadn't seen Darry cry not even at their parents funeral.

QUESTIONS:

Is Johnny going to survive?

How's it going to go for Dally

In chapter seven there's reporters that show up at the hospital and start asking Ponyboy, Sodapop and Darry questions, and later, all of the information will be in the paper.

Ponyboy goes home with Sodapop and Darry, and falls asleep in the car. When they get home, he could barely wake up, so Darry carried him up to his room and he was out like a light.

Ponyboy was then the first one to wake up that morning so he went downstairs to make eggs. Two-Bit and Steve poked there heads into the house and asked if anyone was home, then let themselves in when they saw Ponyboy.

We learn that the Curtis boys never lock their door because their house is always open for any one of their friends who needs a place to stay whether it''s because their parents kicked them out or they're running from someone, it's always open.

When they came into the house, Two-Bit came running into the kitchen and gave Ponyboy a big hug, knocking the raw eggs out of his hands. Steve then gave Ponyboy a pat on the back, right where his big bruise is. Steve then hands the morning paper to Ponyboy and the front page said "Juvenile Delinquents Turn To Heroes". Johnny and Ponyboy may have killed a guy, but that was self-defense and they saved a bunch of kids from a flaming building, so they are still considered heroes.

Ponyboy finds out that they want to put him and Soda in a boys' home. Ponyboy then explains how he sometimes has bad dreams or nightmares that he can't remember what happens but he wakes up screaming, or wakes up scared. He had them a lot after his parents died.

Soda then tells Ponyboy that Sandy had to move to Florida to live with his grandmother. Soda was sad so Darry called him by his dad's old nickname for him; Pepsi-Cola. His dad used to call him that because Pepsi-Cola is a soda and his name is Sodapop. Darry doesn't want to leave Ponyboy home alone so Two-Bit volunteers to babysit him. Two-Bit and Ponyboy do the dishes and clean the house.

They went to a restaurant called the Tasty Freeze to get cokes and then the blue mustang pulled up beside them. Randy asked Ponyboy to get in the car so they could talk. Randy confesses to Ponyboy that he doesn't want to fight at the Rumble because he's sick of fighting. Bob, the guy Johnny had killed, was Randy's best friend since grade school, and now he's dead.

Ponyboy and Two-Bit headed to the hospital to see Johnny and Dally.

QUESTIONS:

Why was Randy so open to Ponyboy and telling him everything about how he feels, and why Ponyboy of all people?

Why was there stories in the paper that weren't even about the fire, like the ones about how Darry is raising his brothers and Soda dropped out of school?

In chapter eight Two-Bit and Ponyboy convince the nurses to let the see Johnny, and when they finally get in, Johnny tells them that Tim Sheppard came by to see Dally. He also tells them that the nurses won't let him put a lot of grease in his hair. Johnny asks Two-Bit to get a copy of Gone With The Wind, the book that Johnny and Ponyboy were reading at the church.

When Two-Bit left, Johnny explains to Ponyboy that he can't feel anything below the middle of his back and Ponyboy tries to convince Johnny.and himself that Johnny will be okay.

Johnny's mother shows up to see him, but he doesn't want to see her. The nurse doesn't understand why he doesn't want to see his own mother. Johnny passes out and the nurse kicks Ponyboy out of the room, Two-Bit gives the book to the nurse and tells her to make sure Johnny sees it.

They decide to go see Dally, passing Johnny's mom in the waiting room, she gets mad at them and blames things on them. When they get to Dally's room, he complains to them that the nurses won't let him smoke.

Dally explains how Ponyboy had scared him the other day when he was gong to the hospital because Dally thought that he had broke Ponyboy's neck when he hit the flames off his back. He also complains that he's not able to participate/fight in the rumble.

Dallas asks Two-Bit for his prized possession, his black-handled switch blade, and Two-Bit gives it to him. Dally puts it under his pillow. They had to leave because when Dally gets in a certain mood, with blazing eyes, it's not safe to talk to him.

Two-Bit and Ponyboy caught a bus home, and Pony wasn't feeling well. Ponyboy begs Two-Bit not to tell Darry that he feels sick. The two decide that the only thing keeping Darry from being a soc, other than not having much money, is the gang, the Greasers. Darry is too smart to be a Greaser, but his friends and family are Greasers, so he is too.

When Two-Bit and Ponyboy passes the vacant lot, Cherry was there in her car. She said hi to them, told Two-Bit what was going on (she's their spy), and then as the boys were walking away, she told Ponyboy to stay for a minute.

She wanted to talk to Ponyboy. She talked about how Bob and Randy were best friends and how Bob was a nice guy when he wasn't drunk, then she asked how Johnny was. She said she couldn't go see him because even though he's a good kid, he's still the guy who killed her boyfriend. Ponyboy kind of lashed out at her, then he felt bad so he brought up the sunsets again. They both love sunsets.

QUESTIONS:

Why did Dally want Two-Bit's switch blade?

Why did Cherry have to talk to Ponyboy in particular? Same with Randy?

We learn that Ponyboy often takes four or five aspirins when he has a headache of when he can't sleep at night and that Ponyboy is always late for supper.

The Curtis boys, and the other Greasers, get cleaned up for the rumble to show the Socs that they're just as good as they are. Soda and Steve lay poker together but they both always cheat. They also have extra grease in their hair to show that they're proud to be Greasers.

Ponyboy asks every one of the Greasers why they like to fight. Soda and Steve like to do anything that's like a contest, like a street race or something, and they just want to beat the Socs. Darry likes to show off his muscles and scare off his opponents. Ponyboy himself doesn't like to fight, but he will fight anyone anytime if he has to, and for self-defense. Two-Bit likes to fight because everyone else does, he does everything other people do.

The Greasers chant all these things about Greasers as they do cool tricks off the front steps of the Curtis boys' house. They chant things like "Greaser... Greaser... Greaser.." and start imitating the Socs.

Other Greaser/hood gangs like the ones from Brumly and Tim Sheppard's gang started to arrive at the vacant lot for the rumble. Then the Socs pull up in their fancy cars.

Darry was worried about Soda but mostly about Ponyboy. He warned his little brothers to get out of there as soon as possible if the cops showed up or if there was any big trouble. Ponyboy realized that the greasers shouldn't be there. They're Greasers, not hoods.

The Socs and The Greasers lined up across from each other and stated the rules, first gang to leave loses and nothing but their fists. Darry and a Soc named Paul Holden started off the rumble with trash talking. The two had been friends and used to play football together in high school.

After the first punch was thrown by Paul, the rumble began and Dallas came running in to join, after escaping the hospital. Ponyboy was the smallest there so he took the smallest of the Socs, who was still bigger. He was pinned so Darry came and took the guy out, and Ponyboy went to help Dally because he could only really use one arm.

They were all beat pretty bad, someone had stepped on Ponyboy's ribs, but the Socs had run first, which means the Greasers/hoods had won. Immediately after the rumble, Dally and Ponyboy had gone to the hospital to see Johnny, before it was too late. They got pulled over by the cops for speeding, but Dally simply said he's taking him to the hospital and the cops let him go. When they got there the doctor said they couldn't see him because he was dying, but when Dally pulled out Two-Bit's switchblade, the doctor let them in.

They gave the good news to Johnny before it was too late, that they had beaten the Socs. Johnny was so weak he could barely open his eyes. He responded by saying that fighting was useless. Dally told Johnny that they were all proud of him because he was a hero.

Johnny was dying, his last words to Ponyboy were "stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold", then he passed away. He said those words to Ponyboy because of the poem he had told Johnny about that said "nothing gold can stay"

In chapter 10 Ponyboy goes home and everyone is upset and sitting on the couch. Ponyboy announces the Dally had run away after Johnny died, because Johnny was the only person or thing that Dallas had loved, then the phone rang and they discovered that the cops are after Dally for robbing a store. They find Dally running towards the house but he stops as the cars are pulling up and he raises his gun, that's not loaded, so the cops think he'll shoot them. The cops then shoot Dally, and he was dead before he even hit the ground.

Ponyboy was so upset because two of his friends had died that day, one a hero and the other a hoodlum. There wasn't going to be any praise for Dally in the paper, even though he did everything that he could for Johnny and Ponyboy. He even pulled Johnny out of the burning church to save him.

Ponyboy had been in the hospital for a few days with a concussion from being stomped on the head in the rumble. After he got back and was at him, he was talking to Darry and thought, maybe he hadn't asked for Darry at all while he was sick in the hospital, but Ponyboy couldn't remember anything. Sodapop assured him that he asked for Darry plenty of times and he could stop worrying. Darry went to make soup for Ponyboy because he refused to eat while he was sick and just kept saying he doesn't like baloney. By the time Darry came back with the soup, Soda and Pony were already asleep. Sodapop was also exhausted because him and Darry didn't get much sleep while Ponyboy was sick.

The rules of the rumble were no weapons just bare hands and first team to run away loses. The Greasers were all excited and doing flips and gymnastics off the front porch of the Curtis boys’s house. They showed up to the vacant lot and the other gangs who were hoods, like Tim Shepard’s gang, started to show up and they all shook hands because they’re on the same side. The Socs then showed up in their fancy cars and they lined up facing each other. Ponyboy was the smallest one there. Darry warned Sodapop and Ponyboy to get out of there if the cops showed up or if there was any big trouble. Darry stepped forward to start the rumble. His old buddy from the football team in high school, Paul, stepped up to start with him. Dally came running in because he had escaped the hospital. That distracted Darry as Paul took the first punch to start it all off. Darry was worried about Ponyboy because he had been sick before the rumble. Ponyboy was pinned so Darry came and pushed the guy off of him. Pony then went and helped out Dally because he could only use one arm. The Greasers ended up winning and as happy and relieved as they were, Dally and Ponyboy races to the hospital to see Johnny.

Tragic Events

In The Outsiders there are many tragic events that occur.

Pony and Johnny get jumped at the park, and Ponyboy almost gets drowned in the fountain, which leads to Johnny stabbing Bob out of self-defense and fear.

The two go to Dally for help and he sends them to an abandoned church on Jay Mountain, plus he gives them $50 and a gun. The boys almost starve to death after only eating baloney for a few days. Thad to die and cut their hair so they wouldn't be recognized.

Pony and Johnny were on their way home with Dally to turn themselves in, when the noticed the church was on fire. They went to check it out and realized they had probably dropped a burning cigarette on the ground, which makes the fire their fault. They felt the need to go in and save the kids who were stuck in the flaming church, but a burning cylinder fell on Johnny as Ponyboy was escaping. Dally rushed in and dragged Johnny out to safety, but the cylinder had landed on his back. All three of them were rushed to the hospital in ambulances. Ponyboy ended up being fine with a few severe burns, Dally had burnt one of his entire arms, and Johnny, if he lives would be paralyzed for the rest of his life.

The rumble occurred and Dally had escaped the hospital and showed up to the big fight. The Greasers beat the Socs, then Dally and Ponyboy rushed to the hospital to see Johnny.

The doctors said it was too ate and he was dying so they couldn't see him, but Dally pulled out Two-Bit's switchblade and the doctor let them in. Johnny gave the copy of Gone With The Wind to Ponyboy to keep and finish reading. His last words to Ponyboy were "Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold". Johnny was the only one Dally had ever loved and when he died, Dally ran away.

When Ponyboy finally got home, the phone rang and it was Dally. He had robbed a store and the cops were after him. They all saw him at the vacant lot and were ready to hide him, but then he stopped when the cops got to him. He held up his "bluff gun" (a gun that's not loaded), and the cops shot him. He was dead before he hit the ground.

Ponyboy finally decides to pick up the book Johnny had given him, and a note was inside. The note said that dying was worth it because he saved the lives of the kids who's lives were worth more than Johnny's. He said to tell Dally that it was worth it and to tell Dally to look at a sunset because he had probably never seen one. The problem was, Dally was dead, and it was too late to do everything that Johnny wanted Ponyboy to do for him.

At the very end of the book, we realize that the entire book was the English assignment that Ponyboy's teacher wanted him to do to get his grades up.

I think the author included these events because they make the book more interesting, especially for the boys, because who doesn't love books with lots of action?

In chapter eleven, Ponyboy had to stay in bed for a week because he had been sick, so he spent the week reading every book he could find, and he read one of Sodapop's old yearbooks, only to come across a picture of Bob, the man Johnny had killed. We learn stuff about Bob, like that he had a reckless grin like Soda and black hair with dark eyes. We also find out he was only 18 when he died and that he only caused all this trouble because no one ever tried to stop him and he just wanted a bit of discipline from his parents.

A few kids from school had stopped by to see Pony, but then Randy came to visit him. Randy kept to the subject of the hearing with the judge, even though Ponyboy didn't want to talk about it. He said that he was going to stick to the truth, that Bob and himself were drunk and scared Johnny into killing Bob. This made Ponyboy angry because he was still very shaken up about this whole Johnny thing. Ponyboy tried to convince himself and Randy that it was him who killed Bob, not Johnny.

Darry came into the room and told Randy he should leave. As he was leaving, Darry told him never to talk about Johnny with Ponyboy. He then proceeded to tell Ponyboy to stop smoking in bed because he can't hep himself if the bed catches on fire. Darry also calls Ponyboy "little buddy" which he usually only calls Sodapop that so it made Ponyboy happy.

Chapter 12

In chapter twelve the hearing with the judge takes place. It wasn't anything like Ponyboy thought it would be like. The only people there were Randy, his parents, Cherry, her parents, a couple of the other guys who had jumped Johnny and Ponyboy that night they killed Bob, and the doctor. The doctor was there to talk to the judge before the hearing. He told the judge not to ask Ponyboy about the incident because it was Johnny who killed Bob, but Ponyboy was so convinced that it was himself and he was still very shaken up. The judge just asked Ponyboy questions like if he liked living with Darry, how he liked school and what kind of grades he got. The judge let Pony off the hook and said the case was closed. Just like that it was all over.

Ponyboy wanted things to go back to normal, but they didn't. He started running into things, tripping over stuff and losing everything. One time he walked all the way home without shoes and didn't notice until Steve pointed it out. He was never hungry and he was slacking up on all of his schoolwork and homework. He's still okay in math because Darry checks his homework and makes him do it again if he's wrong, but he's lucky if he gets a D in English.

Ponyboy runs into some of Bob's old soc friends and they start threatening him. Pony smashes his Pepsi bottle on the car to make it a sharp broken bottle. The Socs leave him alone, and Two-Bit and Steve comment that he was probably actually going to use the bottle because he has had enough of the Socs. Still being a soft guy, Ponyboy picked up the broken glass from his bottle and put it in a trash can.

His English teacher tells him that he has one last chance to bring his grades up, if he writes a good semester theme paper. He couldn't think of a theme so he just drew horses on his papers. After dinner that night, Darry and Ponyboy had their fourth fight of the day and Sodapop had had enough of them fighting. He ran out and the other two ran after him. They hadn't realized that they kept driving Sodapop crazy by dragging him into the middle of their fights. They decided to stop fighting for Soda's sake.

Ponyboy finally decided to pick up the copy of Gone With The Wind that Johnny left for him and read it. There was a note inside the book for Ponyboy, from Johnny. The note said "Ponyboy, I asked the nurse to give you this book so you could finish it. The doctor
came in a while ago but I knew anyway. I keep getting tireder and tireder. Listen, I don't mind dying now. It's worth it. It's worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for. Some of their parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth it. Tell Dally it's worth it. I'm just going to miss you guys. I've been thinking about it, and that poem, that guy that wrote it, he meant you're gold when you're a kid, like green. When you're a kid everything's new, dawn. It's just when you get used to everything that it's day. Like the way you dig sunsets, Pony. That's gold. Keep that
way, it's a good way to be. I want you to tell Dally to look at one. He'll probably think
you're crazy, but ask for me. I don't think he's ever really seen a sunset. And don't be so bugged over being a greaser. You still have a lot o f time to make yourself be what you want. There's still lots of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don't think he knows. Your buddy, Johnny." Ponyboy realized that it was too late to tell Dally all these things Johnny wanted him to say to him. He doubted that Dally would have listened anyways.

Ponyboy called his teacher and asked how long his paper can be. His teacher said it had to be a least five pages long but it could be as long as he wanted. He had finally thought of a theme. He sat there remembering a handsome, dark boy with a reckless grin and a hot temper. He as remembering Johnny. He thought about how to start the theme. He chose his first sentence as "When I stepped
out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home...". This sentence is the same as the first sentence in the book. That means that the whole book, The Outsiders, is Ponyboy's semester theme paper, that's why it's written in the perspective of Ponyboy.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

1. Some of the nature imagery in this book is how the author describes the neighborhood that the Greasers live in and the neighborhood that the Socs live in. She describes the Greasers' neighborhood as though it has more run down, old looking houses and a bunch of places to hangout at, in walking distances. She describes the Socs' neighborhood as though it had rich mansion-like houses, or at least new, modern day house that are better than the Greasers' houses. Other nature imagery in The Outsiders is how she describes the park where Johnny and Ponyboy get jumped. She describes it with a nice fountain that I imagine with water shooting up kind of like a waterfall. It sounds like a big park, like Central Park in New York. he described it with tall trees and a pool for the kids. It's a big park, two blocks square.
2. I believe that in the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay, Robert Frost is suggesting that everything starts with beauty, like the early morning sunrises, but once you get used to it, like the sunrise turning into day, it's no longer gold like the sun.
3. This poem relates to the book because it uses the metaphor of a sunrise and Ponyboy loves sunsets and sunrises because they are beautiful and golden. Ponyboy tells this poem to Johnny and he remembers it. Johnny's last words were telling Ponyboy to stay gold, meaning that he's special and needs to keep being his unique self.
4. Everyone is unique in their own way. I chose this theme statement because Ponyboy isn't like most Greasers. He is unique and likes watching sunrises and sunsets. The poem sort of says that everything looses it's beauty, but if you keep being unique, you will stay gold.

1. It seems like loyalty is less important in the 2000's because we don't need it to survive, but it's still important to be loyal. Being loyal to your friends and family will build a trust, and you wouldn't want your loved ones to not trust you.
2. To me, loyalty is way more important than popularity or fitting in because none of that is useful unless you have a few close friends that you can trust with your life.
