It was in this question that I found the biggest differences between my participants. The teacher stated "I am comfortable sharing ideas and listening to others points of view". The school counselors discussed in detail how collaboration was an essential component of their job and that they in fact do not want to handle an issue alone without the input of others. It certainly seemed that collaboration is a much more familiar piece of a school counselors job than a teachers.

Teachers and school counselors listed unwillingness of others to meet as the number one barrier. The teacher also included failure to follow through while the school counselors noted a "get it done quick" mindset. All had the notion that collaboration takes time and it is something to be nurtured and worked on, not accomplished in one meeting.

I found slight differences in the teachers response and the school counselors responses for this question. The teacher stated that individuals should be prepared and willing to share and listen. The school counselors took a larger view and stated that a desire to build a relationship was necessary as well as communicate ideas and work as a team.

Definition of Collaboration

Teachers and school counselors both focused on the importance of working together and reaching goals. I found it interesting that the teacher stated "working with individuals" while the school counselors noted that collaboration could be working with another individual or a group. This seemed to be a more fluid definition and all encompassing.
