“Should Kids Take Mental Health Days,” Child Mind Institute, Rae Jacobson, 2021

Mental health includes the emotional, psychological, and physical well-being of an individual, affecting the way they speak, act and behave. During the pandemic, more children and teens are struggling with mental health issues. The marketing writer, Rae Jacobson, supports the idea of mental health days including instances where a mental health day would help a child and times when it won’t. Jacobson targets parents to effectively input mental health days and incorporate steps to take when it’s more serious. She heavily criticize taking mental health days to avoid taking tests and going to school instead of going to therapy. Jacobson pushes for limits on the amount of mental health days a child can take while also providing more longer term solutions.

Alternative Therapies for Mental Health Problems: 6 Options, Zia Sherrell, 2022

Zia Sherrell is a digital health journalist with over a decade of healthcare experience. Sherrell focuses on six alternatives for mental health issues, such as yoga, kava, and animal therapy. Although these options are great alternatives, some have drawbacks, such as kava, a plant that is used for traditional medicine, reducing anxiety, inflammation, and stress; however, there are reports of liver toxicity and side effects such as headaches and fatigue. There is some evidence that supports the benefits of these therapies, helping with mental issues like depression and anxiety; however, there’s still scientific uncertainty of the true benefits of these methods since research is limited. Overall, all possible solutions to mental health issues have benefits and drawbacks, Sherrell writes to help her readers find the right one.

Why Taking a Mental Health Day Often Isn’t Enough, Jo Yurcaba, 2020

Jo Yurcuba highlights how taking a day off for mental health struggles can help us rest and repair emotionally. Broderick Sawyer has a Ph.D. in psychology, he emphasizes the benefits of mental health days when used correctly; to properly take care of your mental health doing activities that are enjoyable for oneself is more beneficial then sitting at home and watching television. On the other hand, Dr. Sawyer states that mental health days are only a temporary solution and may not be an available solution for everyone, especially for people who cannot afford to take a day off who are often the ones who need a break most. Yurcuba concludes with his call of action persuading his readers to encourage mental health education in school to prevent mental health problems in the future which he deems as more advantageous than taking a day off.

More States Are Allowing Students to Take ‘Mental Health Days.’ But Could the Practice Backfire, Kevin Mahnken, 2022

Mental health problems are worsening among students, and states are trying to attempt to solve this issue by allowing students to take days off from school. Oregon has already implemented this and other states like Kentucky and Maryland are considering similar proposals. Kevin Mahnken covers both sides of the argument: educators believing mental health days replenish students’ energies and help them bounce back and the other viewpoint but also how it may be ineffective and an excuse to skip school. Hence, Mahnken proposes the idea of tackling the issue in school by training teachers and staff to identify students under stress and emphasizing the importance of social and emotional learning.

Daniel Buck provides a different opinion on mental health days for students. He reveals that mental health days don’t solve the problems of mental health diseases and are simply excuses to take a vacation or a day off from school. As a teacher, he has often encountered students who take mental health days and strongly believes in facing mental health issues instead of avoiding them by taking mental health days. He discloses to readers on the conservative news site, The National Review, that depression and anxiety have doubled in students due to the pandemic but he does not believe that taking mental health days are a possible solution.

Doreen Gentzler speaks about the increased advocacy for mental health days during the pandemic. Marc Siegal- an attorney, explains how employees are afraid to speak up to their bosses, thinking that it would affect them negatively; however, the Family Medical Leave Act allows employees to have a leave of up to 12 weeks if the mental health condition is serious. In addition, Siegal states employers and employees should recognize the importance of mental health days and how employees shouldn't be afraid to bring up issues with their bosses. He urges his readers to be unafraid of taking a mental health day off which could help resolve the stigma around taking a leave of absence for one’s emotional well-being.

Her speech calls for support for mental health days in school so that students can practice emotional wellbeing without stigma. This will allow students to take a set amount of mental health days with guidance from mental health counselors before their issues become worse. Instead of schools mandating certain days for mental health breaks students can work with the school to take mental health days when it’s best for themself.

There’s been an increase in people suffering from mental health illnesses since quarantine as people started working and learning at home. With the return to some sort of normalcy, mental illness struggles remain and people are beginning to prioritize their emotional well-being as well. A popular short-term solution among students as well as adults in the workforce is taking leave to take a break for their mental health. While others support valuing emotional health just as much as physical health, some argue that it’s simply an excuse to avoid working or going to school. Others highlight how while mental health days might help temporarily there are other better alternatives instead. This culmination of articles express multiple view points from a variety of perspectives that tackle the effectivity of taking a mental heath day.
