“Reading sensitive and lengthy explorations of people’s lives, ... literally putting yourself into another person’s position — [into] lives that could be more difficult, more complex . . . can lead to more empathy and understanding of other lives.” Literature not only teaches readers important lessons and morals through various characters and plot lines, but also gives readers more understanding of human nature, ranging from love and kindness, to the human desire for wealth and power. Reading allows people to live vicariously through the characters of any story, exposing them to unimaginable situations, without actually having to live through it. As a result, readers learn right from wrong, and also gain more awareness of the world in which they live. It connects readers through shared experience and emotion, demonstrating the similarities between all humans, and in turn, allows readers to better understand people all around them. Several pieces of literature, including “Beowulf”, “Doctor Faustus”, and “Julius Caesar,” expose the common theme of human greed, or more specifically the abandoning of morals and the lengths people will go to in order to gain material wealth, fame, or power.
