Note from Phil Beck re ECFS support for young carers: Please use the links & share with colleagues regarding support and advice for young carers. I would not suggest that a 4 year old is best supported at a young carers group and if IDWs and EYAs come across children who have been identified as possible young carers then they should be referred for a young carers needs assessment as this will also explore what can be done to address the cared for person’s needs, usually the root cause of children being young carers.

Neurodevelopmental Referral provider support

When parents request a GP make a paediatric referral for an child (0-6), early years settings can provide valuable information about the child’s learning, development and progress.

This form has been co-produced with input from Early Years, Speech & Language Therapy and Neurodevelopmental teams. The form is designed to be completed by early years practitioners in collaboration with parents/carers. The information gathered together should be captured on the form, which parents/carers should then take with them, for the GP appointment. The GP will then make a decision to refer for Paediatric assessment, based on the information provided in this form.

Information about learning & development, behaviour & progress observed will strengthen the referral request. Brief summary or bullet points will be most useful in completing the form.

Norfolk Positive Behaviour Strategies (PBS)

Positive Behaviour Strategies (PBS) is a programme for families of children with additional needs produced by our partners in Norfolk Community Health and Care and Family Action. It was developed originally to give group support to families of children who had been referred for assessment by a specialist team. This course will help you think about the messages your child is trying to communicate to you and some practical skills and strategies to help you manage your child in a positive way.

Solihull Approach: Online learning

The Solihull Approach ‘Understanding Your Child’ is a free online course available for everyone who cares for children aged 0-18 years. It’s there to help you recognise emotions in yourself and your child, and helps you to see how these emotions can impact on behaviour.

The course can help increase your confidence as a parent or carer, so that difficulties encountered in everyday life are reduced by seeing a child’s behaviour from their point of view. A closer relationship between you and your child can develop, resulting in a calmer and happier household for everyone.

Learning is split up into sections and you can drop in and out of the course as you need to. Modules are:

Understanding pregnancy, labour, birth and your baby
Understanding your baby
Understanding your child
Understanding your teenager's brain
Understanding your brain (for teenagers only!)
Understanding your child with additional needs
Understanding your child's feelings (a taster course)

Norfolk Schools Inclusion Advice Line

The Inclusion Helpline is an advice and support telephone service which supports schools who need help including pupils within their provision. It is delivered by staff with experience in SEND and inclusion.

Contact the service on 01603 307736, from 8.30am to 4.30pm on Monday to Thursday and from 12.30pm to 4.30pm on Friday.

Early years practitioners in preschool, nursery, childminding and school settings should welcome children with Special Educational Needs and / or Disabilities (SEND). All children with SEND and their families deserve to feel a sense of belonging and have positive experiences in early years settings.

Ordinarily Available Provision has been coproduced by parents, carers, practitioners, SEND coordinators, teachers and early years partners. Anyone working with children can use it to ensure consistent inclusive provision and strengthen relationships between children, families and education settings from the very beginning.

Ordinarily Available Provision describes practices and adaptations that benefit all children and help practitioners feel confident to meet a range of additional learning needs, without formal diagnosis or specialist support.

Wherever children live in Norfolk we want them to have the right support, in the right place, at the right time, enabling them to flourish.
