Religious differences :

- Food : Some things cannot be eaten such as pork for Jewish and Muslim people ; fasting and avoiding meat for 40 days before Easter for Christians…

- Dress : people wear something to cover their heads - ex. Sometimes Jewish women wear wigs, Jewish men might wear kippas ; Muslim men sometimes wear Turbans and women can wear a hijab or niqab.

Fashion :

• Hairstyle : braids, dyed hair, dreadlocks -> they display what people try to project, but they do not tell the whole story.

• Clothes : depends on style, choice, gender and other factors.

Food :

• In some countries (Laos for ex.) people eat more traditional food. In Strasbourg, we have Alsacian food, but also more and more food from around the world.

• Some countries use different spices : in India they use curry powder, in France people use more herbs and few spices.

Architecture :

• In Greece, houses are white to keep the sun out and in England they are often darker and made of bricks. In Alsace, there are colourful houses with wooden foundations.

Celebrations :

• Chinese and Persian New Year mark the beginning of Spring while the Christian is 1st of January (around Christmas) and the Muslim New Year surrounds the lunar calendar (around Ramadan).

• Easter is celebrated differently throughout Europe.

• Many people celebrate birthdays : the younger you are, the more exciting your birthday may be.

Work :
- The way people perceive work and time depends on their culture. How we spend our days depends on our education. In some countries, there is huge unemployment (i.e. Africa and parts of Asia, where many young men are visible in the streets).

- People disagree about success : money , having friends. For women, is it having a family, a job? For men, is it being rich ? Having a prestigious status ? Finding meaning in your work ? Feeling useful ? In traditional Samoan culture, there is no notion of working to become rich, while European culture emphasises work in order to secure the future.
