Unfortunately, millions of teens are addicted to nicotine right now, millions are risking their futures for a high, and millions are going to be addicted to drugs forever because they succumbed to peer pressure and are now at a point of no return. I knew someone who got addicted to nicotine. I was with them when they went through withdrawal. I’ll never forget that. They went through so much pain because of smoking. And they’re not the only one. There are many factors that contribute to this being a big issue. From teen-targeted advertising to peer pressure, many teens unfortunately come into contact with smoking at one point of their life, and no one is better off from it. Smoking is negatively affecting teens of this generation because of increasing nicotine addiction and solidifying their reliance on drugs for the rest of their lives.

this is a letter written by a friend of mine... "I am addicted to nicotine. It sucks, but I am. I began smoking freshman year. I'm a senior now. its been a rough 4 years. It all started around second semester of my freshman year. There was this girl in my biology class, she was a sophomore. We had good chemistry and we got to be really close. She introduced me to a bunch of her friends, and since I didn't have a lot of friends I valued hers a lot. They were really nice and super chill. I felt liked. So I started hanging out with them a lot. But even though they were nice, they had some serious flaws. drugs were a regular occurrence when we were hanging out. I just went along because I was lonely. But the deeper I got into the group the more I realized it was getting harder and harder to say no to nicotine. By the middle of sophomore year it was all I could think about. I would take multiple bathroom breaks from class to go vape in the bathrooms, I would sometimes even take hits in class. I finally told my parents and they were actually really good about it. instead of getting mad the first thing the did was get me help. I started going to a support group, and even though its been a long recovery road I still find myself wanting it sometimes. But I just keep in mind that if I go back to my old ways, I will be so much worse off then if I didn't.

Some may argue that it doesn't matter if teens start abusing drugs in high school. They believe that people are going to get addicted to smoking even if they started as an adult. This statement makes absolutely no sense and has no scientific evidence to back it up. If people don’t start abusing drugs in high school, they are far less likely to get addicted in the future because their brains will be done developing. Once a person's brain stops developing, it makes the possibility of them getting addicted to drugs far less likely. Statements like this are actually very harmful to teens because it makes them feel like when they begin abusing drugs doesn't matter. If teens believe that the actions they make while they’re brains are developing don’t have an impact on their future, they will make decisions that will severely impact their future.
