Briefly, the way we should look at gender is an expression of choice that corresponds to our personality. Though there are roadblocks as to society creating the "average" ideal gender binary roles, but it is scale measured on what's at trend, cultural backgrounds, and the timing of fashion. West & Zimmerman puts it this way, "Sociologists use the phrase doing gender to describe the ways in which we actively obey and break gender rules" (West & Zimmerman 69).

Gender performances is the idea that "we learn complex sets of gendered expectations that tell us how to behave as men and women in varying situations" (West & Zimmerman, 68). What shapes these behavioral norms is society based on past upbringings that are influenced by religion, culture, or trends & timings. I'm sure we've all been guilty of gender stereotyping one point in our lives based off of a certain action or appearance.
