My name is Hayley Clinton, I am the specialist Infant Feeding Midwife for Medway Maritime Hospital, I am also a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).  I have worked at Medway Maritime since September 2016.  Starting as a rotational hospital midwife before heading out to join the community teams, delivering wrap around care from booking pregnancy to home birth and then finally discharging a newly made family.

The first 1,000 days of your baby’s life (the time between when you get pregnant and your baby’s second birthday) are really important for the human brain.

Your baby’s brain is developing really quickly, the quickest that it will grow during their life time.  

Advances in science mean that we know a baby’s brain develops better if they feel safe and secure. This is true when a baby is still inside their mother’s tummy and once they are born.

Simple actions like singing to your baby, stroking or talking to your bump, helps your little one to feel loved and safe.

Scientific research has revealed that when unborn babies and young children feel stressed they release a hormone called cortisol, which prevents healthy brain development.

UNICEF have reported that the right side of a baby’s brain develops best when they enjoy a strong bond with their parents or carers. This brain development is really important as it’s the right side of the brain that is responsible for our emotions and how well we communicate.

So the development of your baby’s brain can affect what sort of adult they will grow up to be, from how well they are able to manage their feelings to whether they can form positive relationships.

All our midwives and maternity support workers are trained to the highest standards set by the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI).  Medway Maternity is proud to be a Unicef BFI Level 3 accredited unit.

In the postnatal period we offer both home and clinic visits for families.  This is what you can routinely expect:
Day 1 @ home
Day 2 @ home for breastfeeding families/telephone contact for artificially feeding families
Day 5 @ home for weighing baby and Newborn Blood Spot screening (NBBS).
Day 10 @ clinic for weighing baby and discharge

Tensions are common in the first few days of life, and should settle by around 1 week. You may see things like a preference to feed or look to one particular side, or less range of motion in the neck.


To help support your baby we suggest lots of skin to skin in an upright position - so baby can stretch their neck out and "bob" to help release it.


Gently encourage your baby to centralise their head, or look the other way if they have a preference.


Ensure you are breastfeeding on both sides - you may need to use alternative positions per side if baby has a preference.


If you are bottle feeding ensure you swap arms so babies can feed on both sides.


If you are concerned about birth tensions or feel they are persisting beyond 1 week, or you are having further feeding issues. Please contact our team on 07771 150396 or ask your community team to refer you.
