When Into the Wild introduced itself a few years later, Krakauer changed his theory. Chris had eaten seeds from the wild potato plant and those seeds contained a toxic alkaloid known as swainsonine. More testing later sparked that theory, and Krakauer kept trying to figure out what was up with the potato seeds. Chris also stated in his journal, “EXTREMELY WEAK. FAULT OF POTATO SEED. This fact was not covered in the book or the biopic in 2007. Chris could not even make it to the park road was only 5 miles away and he would not have had to cross the river either.
