Assessment/ evaluation
p. 474-475

Brynn shared that she has been able to grade a couple of tests and in her classroom she noticed that all of the students were taking the same tests so there was no differentiation between students levels (even though she noticed some students were clearly at different levels). She also noticed that there was a pattern of students in her class doing poorly on the math exams.

Erin shared that in 4th grade, her teacher gives her students different multiplication problems and sets goals for them. You have to pass a certain number of division and multiplication problems in order to meet the standard in 4th grade, so they practice and get rewarded after a certain number of problems.

Brittney shared that when she was correcting homework one student struggled to understand the small details of the assignment and ended up rounding all of the answers up way further than they were supposed to be.

Jessica shared that each week her students have a math test and when she is asked to grade them she noticed a large difference between students because one student would get a perfect on both sides and other students would be struggling to get just a few correct.

Our group decided that we think that having different levels of assessments would benefit each student's learning ability. For time on tasks, we noticed that students will learn more if they are provided extra time instead of rushed through activities. As a group we thought that ensuring that students spend time engaging their prior knowledge will lead to a more successful learning experience. We think that technology in the classroom can be beneficial if it is used in the correct ways. For classroom setup, we felt that it is best for students to be strategically placed in groups so that students are learning from each other without distractions.

Time on Tasks
p. 492
Brittney shared that the teacher that she is with really limits the time that the students are allowed to spend on each activity. She said that she noticed that anything that the student does not finish in class is then assigned as homework, which causes students to rush.

Brynn shared that when she was giving some of the students in her class a spelling test she felt that the time was well balanced because she had to say each word 3 times and then give the word in a sentence which allowed all of the students time to spell out each letter.

Erin shared that students were able to stay in from recess to work on homework that they didn’t finish during class. She said this really helped the student understand.

Jessica shared that in her class the teacher has it set up to that each activity is only done for a very specific time. She also shared that the teacher really presses the idea that the students need to know all of the information in the assigned activity for the standardized test. Jessica commented that she like that it was breaking the learning up into groups but that only spending 10 minutes in each of these groups caused the students to rush through the problems.
