My name is Sonia Garcia and my ethnicity is Hispanic, specifically Mexican. My current major is Health Promotion but I am applying to the Nursing Program here at CSU Stanislaus. I have resided in Modesto the majority of my life with my parents and 3 older siblings. I have a German Shepherd dog that I love to take out for walks and play fetch with. His name is Kilo and he is 3 years old! I go to Mexico every year during December to visit my parents' extended family. I help out my grandparents pick their crops from their fields: strawberries, raspberries, corn, peas, and tomatoes. I hope to be able to visit during the summertime too because I like experiencing the thunderstorms in Mexico.

My definition of sustainability is the actions taken in order to protect our natural resources and the environment that we occupy. I practice this in my life when I recycle bottles and cans that I use and drink out of reusable straws.
My definition of information literacy is being able to recognize when to use the appropriate source in order to prove a point. Choosing the right piece of evidence can sometimes be difficult because it can make or break your argument.
I would like to learn more about information literacy because the process of evaluation can be stressful.

Period poverty is a struggle that low-income women and girls face when trying to afford hygiene products for their menstruation. This is due to the financial burdens that these supplies pose.
Period poverty affects women and girls that have a low-income. Although this is a global issue, I will be focusing in the United States. This issue falls under the social pillar because it affects the quality of women and girls' lives.
This topic has developed by gaining more advocacy and gaining support in countries such as Scotland, which was the first in the world to make all of their feminine hygiene products free.
My research is important because without having the safe and appropriate products during menstruation, women and girls are forced to improvise with harmful and unhygienic things. Poor menstrual hygiene can lead to reproductive and urinary tract infections. My research is important to me because I feel there is a lot of stigma pertaining to the subject of menstruation and I believe that younger girls should be educated about their bodies and being safe. I hope to learn how to make people feel comfortable about speaking on the subject and encourage them to advocate for the importance of putting an end to period poverty.

Sample Rhetorical Analysis and Information Literacy

The article I chose to analyze is "Everyone Is Tired of Always Staying Silent" by Julia Lurie and published by the magazine Mother Jones. The author's purpose is to bring attention to a worker rebellion caused by the oppression they were facing at the company Primex. The author proves their point to an audience that is willing to make a change for those that are too scared. Farmworkers, approximately half, are undocumented and do not enter labor unions or strikes for fear of being detained by ICE. A rhetorical device that is used is pathos. Immigrant workers do not have effective labor rights, even though they are essential workers. The appeal to logic is used when the author brings up how over 140 of 400 workers were infected with COVID-19, yet would still show up because they were not getting any sick pay. This allows the audience to show compassion for those farmworkers that have to suffer through a life-threatening virus but have to show up to work to put food on the table for their families. Remigio Ramirez's story is told to emphasize this point. “When I got up the next day, I didn’t see anyone—not my wife, not my daughters,” he says. “And I thought to myself, What’s happening? Did they leave me alone? But no, each one was in their room, sick.” This demonstrates that with the author's use of pathos, the readers empathize for the laborers that got infected at work, and then came home only to infect their own families. If the appropriate safety measures had been taken by the Primex company, these situations would not have happened.
Using the Information Literacy Framework, I examined the authority of the author. Julia Lurie is a senior writer at the magazine Mother Jones. She has received four awards and received her Bachelor's Degree for Political Science at Yale University. She is an author that advocates for social issues in her pieces. Other topics that she tackles are racial discrimination, truths about foster care, and homelessness. Seeing her bring awareness to all of these issues, including farmworker's rights, makes her a credible writer.

Does the inability to purchase period products and take care of themselves during their menstrual cycle damage a women's self-esteem?

I used the Ask a Librarian feature to ask what database they would recommend me to check first in finding articles about period poverty. My librarian's response was very quick and he asked me questions to help me narrow down my searches, such as time period and location. He suggested to search the term poverty, u.s. 2000-2021. He also suggested the filters Full text and Scholarly or Peer Reviewed so I get the whole article and to read the abstracts on the articles I chose. He was very specific on what to click and what my screen would look like so it was very helpful to me since I have not used the Stanislaus State Library Database before.

The narrative of my topic is that free/reduced sanitary products will put an end to period poverty. The counternarrative is that free/reduced sanitary products will not put an end to period poverty. The counternarrative asserts that pricy menstrual products are not the sole cause for period poverty. This counternarrative will help me solve the problem I am writing about because it will force me to talk about what other factors play into period poverty, including cultural taboos, stigmas, no sanitary places or products even available.

The genre that I chose to write was a eulogy. The audience is typically loved ones: family and friends, and people that want to extend their support. Emotion is created with a sorrowful tone and choice of words that celebrates someone's life.

Good evening, I would like to thank everyone for attending the funeral of my heavenly mother, Karen Zandarski. I know that everybody in this room was close to my mother and loved being around her; she would be happy to see so many people gathered to honor her life. Forgive me if I become emotional during this speech, it has been difficult for me to accept the loss of my mother.
Karen was an amazing person that played many roles: mother, wife, sister, aunt, friend, and professor. I'm lucky to have had her as my mother. She had the purest soul, always so thoughtful, loving, and willing to give her kids the world and more. She was always there. Whenever I was sick with a cold, going through boy problems, deciding where to go to college, and even that time I ran out of gas on the freeway. My mother always took care of me, no matter what. My mom always gave me words of encouragement, pushed me to be a better person, and comforted me when I was going through a rough patch. She was also my best friend, biggest supporter, and fearless protector. She was my everything. I wish so badly that she had not been taken away from us so quickly. But I hope that we can all remember her as the great and wonderful person that she was. Karen will forever live in my memory as the best mother.
Thank you, mom, for your unconditional love. I will miss you so much.
