  • This organization works to provide basic building blocks for success that give every child a healthy start and level playing field. The organization strives to end child poverty by providing policies and programs that lift children out of poverty and ensure access to health care, quality education, ample nutrition, safe neighborhoods, and access to resources and opportunities. The two most popular programs are Freedom Schools and Beat the Odds, but CDF also offers Children’s Sabbath Celebration and Proctor Institute. Freedom Schools provide summer and after school enrichment programs that support children and young adults.  Beat the Odds is a scholarship based program that honors outstanding high school students who have excelled academically and as leaders despite the challenges they may face. CDF works alongside federal, state, and local governments to advocate for policies that improve children's lives. CDF also trains and equips young people, faith communities, decision makers, and community organizations to become advocates for children across the country.  (159)

  • This article was written by Alla Katsnelson for the New York Times. The article talks about how poverty affects children’s brains. Researchers have found that children who grow up in poverty have smaller brains. On average, the surface area of the brain’s outer layer of cells is smaller, especially in areas relating to language and impulse control, as is the volume of a structure called the hippocampus, which is responsible for learning and memory. This would affect how the child learns, and their ability to perform well in school.These differences don’t reflect inherited or inborn traits, research suggests, but rather the circumstances in which the children grew up. In other words, it’s not their genetic make-up that has this effect on their brain, but rather their living conditions and how they grew up.

  • Heartland Alliance works to intersect health and heading, safety and justice, and economic opportunity by providing a continuum of programs that address poverty, generate social change, and inspire people to build better lives. The Alliance consists of five entities: Heartland Alliance, Heartland Alliance Health, Heartland Alliance International, Heartland Housing, and Heartland Human Care Services. These Alliances provide research and policy development, primary, oral, and behavioral healthcare in center and beyond doors (in streets, shelters, or housing facilities), as well as high quality affordable housing where the most vulnerable can live with dignity. Heartland Alliance specifically provides people with job training and financial education opportunities to gain skills needed to move out of poverty and away from financial instability. Asset Building and Chicago Farmworks are programs that are offered to empower families to create their own path to economic security by providing secure full time, permanent jobs and distributing local produce to those who need it most.   • This article was written by Teresea Watanabe for the Los Angeles Times. The article talks about how students in high poverty areas are losing 2 weeks of learning time annually. This is because of teacher absences, testing, emergency lockdowns and other disruptions compared with their more affluent peers in other schools. In heavily low-income schools, students lost about 30 minutes a day to factors often connected to economic pressures. Lack of transportation led to more tardiness, for instance, and more transiency made it more difficult to form stable classrooms. Poverty has a big impact on students, and disrupts their day to day life.
