When I was picking a book, I didn’t really go back and forth between books, this one jumped out to me. This is because of its scientific “what if” scenario. 

  • This book is sci-fi 
  • He also wrote “Hässelby”
  • This is a modern read
  • Has not been made into a movie

So far I like the book. What I’ve read was what NASA is covering up a conspiracy and is holding a lottery to send 3 teenagers to the moon.

Connection 1: The first connection I have with “Validation” is to  the short film “Say yes”. The two themes connect by both giving/wanting validation. The wife in “say yes” was to be validated or assured by her husband, even though he fails to do so. That is the one difference between these two films. “Validation” gives that assurance to the people whereas “say yes” fails.

Connection 2: Another connection that can be made between “Validation” is to the movie “Hacksaw Ridge”. In this movie, Private Doss is fighting for the validation from his other soldiers. At the start, they do not like Doss. Overall, the book falls in the science-fiction genre and I really enjoy the style. I have finished 207 pages of my book and I am discovering a great deal about my character’s conflict. If you recall, my character Mia is a 17 year old who won a lottery to go to the moon. She was very skeptical about going and became even more cautious once she saw specific signs that told her to stay on Earth. Despite these signs, she decided to go on the trip as it could prove to launch her music career when she came back home. This conflict can be seen as an identity crisis because Mia is fighting her own conscious. She is doing this because the trip to the moon as a teenager could set her up for life, despite the many risks that are very clearly present. For the rest of this blog, I would like to share a pivotal moment in the book that demonstrates this identity crisis.

The moment that really defines my character is when she gets persuaded into going to the moon early on in the book. Originally, Mia didn’t even want anything to do with the lottery to the moon. The only reason why she was selected was because her parents secretly put her name in the drawing on Mia’s behalf. Once word came that she was to be one of the three teenagers going to the moon, Mia immediately lashed out at her parents, not wanting to go at all. However, after talking with her band mates, who are her closest friends, it turns out Mia now wanted to go on the trip solely for the reason that this could launch her band into superstardom. This can clearly be seen in the excerpt on page 61 “‘So? Don’t you get it? This is the opportunity of a lifetime, Mia! It’s not going to get much better than this. Don’t you get how famous you’ll be? You’ll be able to do whatever you want after this. Whatever. You. Want.’” It was at this point in the book where Mia decided to take the trip. This was the beginning of her identity crisis, as deep down she still felt like this wasn’t the right decision, but perhaps the reward was worth the risk. The most intriguing quote that showed Mia’s internal conflict would be on page 115 “Because she’d spent a night on the town in New York City, it taught her one thing: She was the one who decided which path she should take.” This quote also identifies Mia’s identity crisis as she realized that she shouldn’t make her decision for anyone else; but, at this point, it was too late for Mia to turn back.

I can relate to Mia and her situation as I’ve been in this same situation myself and I’m sure many of you reading this have as well. Mia found herself in a spot where she is doing what she is doing in order to try and please others, in this case, she is trying to please her friends. This goes against Mia’s own beliefs as she really does not feel comfortable going on this trip. I have been in similar scenarios myself. There have been certain times where I’ve come something in order to please my own friends, even though I gained no benefit or it was kind of against what I would do by myself. I think many people can relate to Mia in this sense, as a lot of the population has an internal conflict of whether to please others around them or to act on their own internal thoughts.
