pg-67- Edmond started hearing a scratching sound coming from the wall
I think that the thing in the wall is going to be a rat. This is because it was stated earlier in the book that Edmond's cell was in the deepest part of the Chateau d'if, so if a prisoner was trying to escape they would be going in the opposite direction. Edmond also said there are many rats in his cell, it would make sense if one of them dug into the wall. Dantes also said it sounded like an animal burrowing into the wall.

pg-60- Edmond Dantes has just been brought to his cell and describes the cell.
I can Image the state of the cell. It is a very shabby stone room that feels freezing to the touch. The ground is covered in dirt and other unidentifiable stains. There is one foul bucket in the corner that looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years and there is an awful smell emanating from it that fills the room. Unlike most of the other cells there are no windows in this room, which makes the sent stronger.

The scene describes when Dantes has a canon ball tied to him and is thrown into the water
I still don't understand why Edmond didn't drown. The way the page was written made it very confusing to me. The scene was written very lively which gave it a good tone but made it very hard to understand exactly what was going on.

The big idea in this book is that revenge does not make someone happy. While most readers would agree that Dantes has every right to be angry and to seek justice, Dumas strives to show that despite all the effort that Dantes puts into getting revenge, in the end, he is not happy because of it. Rather, he gains contentment from restraining himself and by being willing to "walk away" at a certain point.

A golden line for me is on page 267 when the count explains why he does the things he does,"What is truly desirable? A possession that we cannot have. So, my life is devoted to seeing things that I cannot understand and obtaining things that are impossible to have. I succeed by two means: money and will. I am as persevering in the pursuit of my whims..." The Count is saying that rather than doing things because he enjoys it, he does things because he can. Like a climber who scales a mountain because it's there. This is important because it shows how corrupted the Count truly became. At the beginning of the book, he felt lucky for life's simplest pleasures, but now he doesn't even do things he enjoys.
