There they meet Mrs Who and Mrs Which, along with Calvin O'Keefe, a popular boy at Meg's high school. The three children learn from the 3 W's that the universe is threatened by a great evil called the Dark Thing and taking the form of a giant cloud, engulfing the stars around it. Many planets have already lost to this evil force, including Camazotz, the planet Mr. Murry is being imprisoned.
