Let's collect some ideas for addressing non-cognitive issues in our classes. Create at least one post on the wall where you a) point out a non-cognitive issue you encounter in your class, and b) a strategy you use for dealing with it.

I accommodated the request by finding a separate, empty room for him to take the test in. By the time the course was drawing to a close the student felt comfortable enough in class that he was taking quizzes and tests with the rest of the class.

As you can imagine, many of the students are embarrassed/ashamed to disclose that they are a "drunk driver." To ease their discomfort and take the edge off for their support person, we host a pot-luck during class. Sharing a meal lessens the tension for everyone. Many of the students bring crock-pots full of amazing food. :)

Many of our program students are first generation students of higher education. Additionally we have a wide range of age demographics in our program of both traditional and non traditional adult learners. We created a program wide Student Mixer to encourage interaction and bonding amount their peers. This also encourages new students to connect with a continuing student in the hopes of created an informal mentoring experience. Lunch was provided for the students and we played Minute To Win It games. The teams were divided ahead of time to establish a good variety in their group and promote meeting new peers. We had approx. 50 students attend and they had an amazing time and surprisingly embraced the experience and really got in to the games and team dynamic. It also allowed the students to see a more "playful" side of our faculty as we dressed up and facilitated the games and cheering. I've since seen new networks created, students moving around in table groups more and connecting with second year students in the hallway. The intent was to create a program that supports each other as a whole and we feel it was very successful. T. Esser

Being a French speaker she was struggling with language barriers in the clinic when trying to communicate with her patients and stay on schedule. She told me that she had never been in a dental clinic to observe the flow of an appointment. I offered that she come into the private practice that I work at and observe how an appointment is supposed to flow. I talked to her about different ways to get help for her communications issues of which I as not well versed in that area. She took me up on the offer and came to my clinic and observed for a day. At the end of the day, she appreciated the opportunity. She did graduate and passed her board exam. She also is taking classes that help her with communicating skills.
--Doris King--

The student was very good with being able to perform and learn the required abilities but was unable to meet the attendance needs. To resolve the issue is we teamed with a couple different courses and he would attended sessions in one and the ones he wasn't able to make he attended in the other. Additionally, us instructors took time to teach special sessions a couple times to complete his attendance. He ended up with the all material covered and attendance requirements met but through a few different sources. -Chris Dennis

I have found that many of my students have an intense fear of public speaking. Because the course I teach is how to instruct and lead a group of people, having the students get in front of their peers at least once is necessary. Before their first presentations I do many small group and partner work to help the students become more comfortable with each other. I also let them know if the thought of public speaking is too paralyzing to them that I will stand in front of the class with them and help them instruct.
Becky Ingebrigtsen

Generally Overwhelmed by Content

I've had quite a few students who feel overwhelmed by the amount of material they are required to memorize. It's not necessarily an inability to memorize the material as much as just general anxiety when they realize the scope. I have addressed this in a few ways: I hold quizzes throughout the semester to encourage the students to memorize works of art in smaller chunks; I have put together multiple different study tools for them on their course Blackboard site; we practice memorization through in-class games; I create online Jeopardy-style games for the students. All of these methods give the students MANY tools to use for memorizing works of art and allows them to pick the ones that work best for them. It helps them spread out the material and not feel so overwhelmed when they realize they have to memorize hundreds of works of art.
- Alexandra Lyon
