I went to Florida with my best friend. We were told 30 minutes before we were supposed to board, that our flight was canceled for the second time that month! So we jumped in the car and drove! So glad we did it, because it was horrible weather back home! We made lemonade out of lemons for sure!

My biggest take away from yesterday was just learning all the logistics. I already knew relationships were going to be important from my former coaching job. Definitely not an easy task, but any essential one. I really enjoyed meeting my fellow coaches and all the directors of the service centers as well. Also the CELL staff is top notch!

My first strategy would be to create smaller “learning pits” that help to build efficacy. I feel like this would help foster a sense of success and get them to be more willing to jump back into a new pit.
My second would be to create a strong relationship with my coaches, as doing so will give more value to my encouragement and modeling.

I plan to have conversations with all the stakeholders and determine what sorts of things are in the pit. I will then create smaller pits and do some goal setting to get the coaches out of their pits and moving towards mastery in those areas. My plan is to have the coaches work towards mastery in areas where they are weak and become more self sufficient and autonomous.

1) I really like the idea of building on the strengths of the teacher/coaches and talking about how the work we are doing will SUPPORT that and not just be "another thing" for them to do.
2) I also want to incorporate the love languages and use that in building relationships. I think this will go a long way in us understanding each other and how we can best work together.

1). As of now, I am planning on creating "Coach Profile" pages where I find out as much information as possible (i.e. love language, favorite drink, 3 items on their bucket list...) to be able to build a trusting relationship, communicate efficiently and encourage effectively.
2). I want to learn more about an effective coaching cycle and incorporate those strategies to help coaches set, work toward, accomplish and reflect on goals continually.

I am good at reflection. I enjoy looking over how well or poorly an activity worked or what helped or hindered me reaching a goal I've set for myself.
I need to work on Dialogue. Depending on the topic and the audience, I sometimes have trouble maintaining composure if there is conflict. I am good at listening but can sometimes have a little trouble with focusing on the one topic.

I think the partnership principle I am doing well is voice. During my time as an instructional coach, I created a space for my teachers where they felt safe expressing their thoughts and opinions. They knew that what they said would stay between us and, in cultivating this relationship, we were able to learn from and work well with each other.

The principle I'd like to focus on is reflection. We've talked a lot already about how our job is not to come in and have all the answers or solve all their problems. I am a fixer... so I need to work on sitting back and allowing that reflection piece to be a part of our work together.

Reflection is a strength of mine. I take a lot of time to think through, adjust and learn from as much as I can.

My next steps are strengthening choice. Knowing that some choices made will be better than others, and helping coaches reflect so that each choice gets better and better. I also want to do well with recognizing choice possibilities.

I think that dialogue would be a strength for me, as I find it easy to listen to others, hear what they have to say, and find a common ground for input.
Reflection would be an area that I could work on, as I often get lost in the “doing”. Working as a team, rather than alone would help this, as it would lend itself to a time where we could have a conversation about what worked and what didn’t in any given situation.

One area I need to work on is Equality. I am coming from a classroom where I am the sole leader in the room. I have made all the day to day decisions that impact student learning, how I will carry it out, and determine how student needs should be addressed. I will have to shift my mindset to that of a partnership where decision-making is a collaborative process.
An area that I am good at is in personal reflection. I am constantly reflecting throughout the school day and making adjustments based on those reflections.

Start small and build meaningful relationships to develop trust and dependability. Credibility with those we are "teaching to fish" will be essential in helping with next steps!

The second strategy will be creating benchmarks in order to make a goal less daunting. So many times we end up in "the Pit" because we are trying to to tackle an entire goal all at once. I believe if we want to create a sustainable project we need to demonstrate sustainable goal attainment.

I learned about "The Learning Pit". These concepts make sense, and I had never thought about it this way. I also learned about John Hattie and "Visible Learning". I had not heard about this research, and I found it very interesting....especially the "Blue Zone".

Questions for next week....why are the coaches and administrators learning the same content that we are July 11-15? I was thinking that we are being trained so we could train them in what we learned? Just curious about this process.

I love the notion of speech and reading not being neurologically connected. The scientist in me immediately moved to the role of evolution in how humans are able to read as opposed to lower primates who can learn words, "verbalize", and use ASL for instance. The evolution will catch up eventually!

I am fascinated with how the brain works and I really enjoyed reading/hearing/learning about the specific parts of the brain and the role they play in learning to read.

The parts of the brain that understand the process of reading have not changed. The Science of Reading elements are what are the best ways to teach this process. However, some schools and "programs" have went totally overboard on mostly meaning based, neglecting the other elements of learning how to read. In reality, you need all of them, not one or the other.

The idea of neuroplasticity is interesting to me. Knowing that the brain can be rewired to achieve different outcomes or to make a process easier was something that I guess I sort of knew as a teacher, but to fully understanding the science behind that process is interesting.

Overcompensating for a deficit. The body does this all the time in various locations so it makes sense that the brain would do this for those who learn reading differently. Using specific strategies identified as beneficial for those learners to help the brain rewire also makes sense. I wonder if there is research about using those specialized strategies with "typical" learners in order to advance the reading process more efficiently.

I am wondering about how best to serve students who enter school knowing how to read - how to acknowledge their skills and keep them engaged in reading.

Observation: Understanding The Science of Reading would be a strength in all grade levels.
Connection: I've been training K-2 teachers in The Science of Reading for a few years... and every year I learn more! :)
Question: Why does our reading curriculum usually follow standards solely, and not have an explicit, direct, sequential and cumulative building of foundational skills?
Surprise: That after researching the science of reading SO long, we are still at the beginning of implementation in schools.... and not very supported in learning these concepts and skills in college.

Connection-much of my literacy training transfers to the Science of Reading....happy to see it is not a "pendulum swing."
Question-still unsure why MSV is not considered a good cueing system when teaching a children how to read. You use what cue the child needs in that moment, not always taking the child to meaning if that is not what they need

1. Observation: Phonemic awareness, although often far removed from the upper grades, is a key step in getting students to comprehend complex text at later stages of their education.

Observation: I really appreciated the variety of activities/protocols/etc. we used today when learning new material!
Connection: Throughout the day, I felt that a lot of the work I did as a first grade teacher connected to the science of reading, but it just looked a little different. I say this because I think it will be important for us as coaches to help ours schools see this connection as well.

Data can be useful when collected with intention. The data must also be analyzed and used with intention. For me as a teacher, data showed me how I need to adjust or evaluate. As a professional outside of the classroom, looking at data to see what has been PROVEN to work or not work based on the latest information helps drive my intentions.

Spreadsheets! Data tells a story and helps drive the "why" behind what we do. Pre/post/formative assessments gave me a picture of what was happening in my classroom and allowed me to change course when my students weren't tracking.

When I think about data I think about numbers that mean nothing to students (who actually need that information) and more than necessary to adults.

Data, in my opinion, should be used to synthesize knowledge, it is NOT knowledge in its own sense. Students should know what their numbers mean so they are empowered to move forward in a positive manner.

Testing and the subsequent data have no meaning to students, thus aggravating the "ugh another test" mentality of students.

Observation: This is A LOT of info!!!!

Connection: Today I realized that the gaps in reading comprehension for older students are similar to the gaps in math for older students. Without the solid foundation of building the correct neural connections when students are younger, students will struggle as the learning difficulty increases.

Question: I am confused about when/how the literacy connects to writing.

I am a "reflector".....Woke up at 5:30 this morning wondering....on the sort we did between Science of Reading and Balanced Literacy, it stated "mini lessons respond to student errors", "small group work is focused on skill deficits" on the Balanced Literacy side. I understand the need for "explicit sequenced" instruction in the early grades for phonemic awareness/phonics, but are we saying that looking at data and addressing students' needs is not beneficial? To me, that is addressing what individual students need. I need to understand because I know this will be asked of me in schools

1. Observation: Coaching will be a complex endeavor that has to take into account several things such as our leadership style, the personality of the coach we are working with, the culture of the school, curriculum in place.

The Transition to Teaching masters program at IU was a cohort. The experience was so much more meaningful than I had expected. I was in my 40s and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the intensity of the program. We became a very cohesive group - supporting each other throughout the process. The professors were also a positive support.
So, the why is that the relationships were an important part of the success of the program.

The learning experience I will never forget is my my high school Earth and Space science class. It was all hands on. We went out at midnight to look at planets, galaxies and constellations, we built models and did experiments. We were ALWAYS using our hands and experiencing science not just memorizing it.

One of the best professional learning experiences that I've experienced was provided by McGraw Hill publishing. I loved this training for many reasons... it was free of charge from McGraw Hill to invited districts. They flew us to Albuquerque, NM. We were a small, intimate group <20 people, and we learned from their CEO David Levin, as well as contributing authors Dr. Jan Hasbrouck, Dr. Vicki Gibson, Dr. Tim Shanahan, and Dr. Doug Fisher, and many others. I felt valued as a professional educator. I was challenged. I grew as an individual; personally and professionally.

One of the best experiences I've had is learning how to use and code with Micro:bits. The facilitator allowed us time to play, ask questions, and then nudged us in the right direction. There was little direct instruction, but we spent time learning what we didn't already know. The embedded formative assessment didn't really feel like assessment, but the activities we did had purpose and exposed what we needed to learn.

Observation - The 5E Instructional Model can be used in all content areas.
Connection - In coaching teachers in PLTW the past couple of years, I needed to meet teachers where they were in their instructional practices. Even though I wanted them to implement the program completely, we reviewed their current practices and identified small places they could integrate the STEM concepts into their day.

Observation: Focusing on preparing to support coaches is getting me so excited to get started... this is the first time I've been this excited for the school year to begin :)
Connection: I'm starting to feel a little more confident putting everything we've been learning together as I plan and prepare to meet and support coaches.

Observation: Organization and time management will be an absolute must!!

If I can't find a solution myself, then I usually ask for help/advice from people that I know first. If I get stuck, then I turn to the depths of YouTube.

I usually think through all that I know then try to find out more information to guide me in the problem solving process. I consider possible solutions and try to predict what possible outcomes could be and choose what seems to be the best solution. If I get stuck, I talk to a trusted resource.

I think that when I face a problem, I go through steps in my head... I try to analyze the problem (the causes or contributors), I try to develop a plan (with some input from others & Google for some other additional information) to overcome the problem, I try to implement my plan, and I see if the issue is resolved. If not resolved, I try something different.

I use the scientific method. duh. lol
No seriously, I assess the issue, get all background info, etc., determine a method of attack, attack the issue, gather any data to determine if a solution has been reached and circle back around if necessary.

When I need to solve a problem, I have to pause and dissect it. Sometimes I may be looking at it as a bigger issue than it really is so pausing makes me think more rationally. If I get stuck, I leave it for a bit and come back to it.

Learning new things and new methodology was the biggest thing for me. Starting to reflect on my learning and how I can use it to facilitate for my coaches.

Its nice to spend time with the other TSSs and learning and growing with them. I love expanding my network.

Working with a small group on the Domain questions and look-fors. The activity really helped to see the most important aspects of each element and how they all work together. I think this will help us to have more meaningful conversations with building coaches and administration.

I have been really impacted by inquiry-based learning and how this type of teaching/learning can be done throughout all subjects areas.

I also love the 5 E's.... I want to go back and turn all of my old lesson plans into 5 E plans. :)

Having a list of items to look for in STEM schools has been beneficial to me (since I have not had as much experience with this). I look forward to more "student-centered" training sessions.

I will build TRUST and RELATIONSHIPS because nothing will change if the coaches do not trust you (and likewise with their teachers). Once trust is established, coaches (and teachers) will work together, and there will not be a feeing of "evaluation" but that of "coaching"/collaborating to solve problems together.
