Spring Recruiting
I take a week and visit the middle school to do auditions. Prior to the placement auditions, I take a student panel to answer any and all questions about high school & Band during the 8th grade classes. I choose a diverse panel that not only march, but also do other extra-curricular activities AND take a fair amount of AP classes (that seems to be what we battle every year with retention.) When I return for auditions, I listen to each student individually and speak with them about staying in band and also marching.

2. "Cluster concert" (marching band performs on stage for both 8th grade groups, student testimonials on mic. These speeches and their talking points are worked out ahead of them. It is strategic who speaks, and what they speak about... we work this out a few days in advance. This is also a chance for me to hit a few major non-musical advantages to parents in audience (PE credit waiver, etc).

We visit the feeder elementary schools in December to perform and encourage the children to join the Band, Chorus, or Orchestra- whichever they think they may like best. No need to choose an instrument prior to joining, students just need to decide which group appeals to them most. Band, Chorus, and Orchestra teacher all work together as a team to encourage children to choose the best option for themselves.

Fall: We take a combined trip with BOC to our feeder ES with small groups. We have 4 feeder ES so this activity takes a full day and another morning for the ES next door. We select about 15 min worth of music and take turns talking about the music programs at EPMS. Things usually work out very well.

Spring:  The ES will take a trip to EPMS where we usually use our 7th grade groups (based up time of day) to play for each school. The ES Students take a tour of the school but before they do that they get to hear one piece from each group.

Recruiting: MS to HS
Students go to an 8th grade night for each of their zoned high schools. 

Cluster Concert at MHS in November; RHS will come to us to play with 8th grade on December 11th at Holiday concert.

HS Directors will visit and give out information to MS Students.

When we offer our petting zoo, I allow the rising 6th grade students to try out all of the instruments that orchestra has to offer. I extend service hours (and donuts) to my 8th grade students to come in that Saturday and answer questions for both the parents and the students. They really enjoy the opportunity to grow our program.

We take about 30 students from Band, Orchestra, and Chorus for a mini tour to the feeding Elementary programs. We typically go in December or early January, and choose a variety of music that the students may recognize. 

We strongly encourage students choose which fine arts group would fit them best, and the most important part is just being involved. 

MS to HS: 
The entire 8th grade band participates in 8th Grade Night at Chattahoochee HS.
