Lana Del Rey

While many of her songs are experimental, oddly sexual, and random, Lana Del Rey covers topics in her songs that most artists in the music industry are afraid to even suggest. With lyrics that is simply poetry, Lana is able to tell stories of her own: domestic abuse, grooming, and miscarriages are just a few of the "taboo" subjects of her music. And while many complain that she romanticizes these traumatic themes, her music acts as an outlet for those who can relate, to understand that they are not alone. For me, Lana has such a range of music that while she has gotten me hype, she's also helped me through my most difficult moments.

Shameless

Although the comedy and storylines of the show are what really kept me watching, Shameless excellently depicted the struggles of families living paycheck to paycheck. I felt I become a more sensitive person after watching the show, detailing experiences of dealing with abusive relationships, a deadbeat father, and especially providing for a family while still in school, knowing that I've never been in a situation remotely similar.

Although I knew what the holocaust was and I knew what was done to the many victims, this book was my first exposure absolutely how horrifying and inhumane conditions were for jewish prisoners. I'm jewish, but was never super religious and found going to services at my synagogue to be one of the most boring experiences ever. However, Night allowed me to understand how important religion is to some people, creating a community and a sense of self in many people. When I visited Israel this past summer, I began to understand more about Judaism and the community that the Israeli people create.

American Horror Story

I've always been a fan of horror, but American Horror Story is much more of a psychotic drama and one of the most disturbing yet addictive series I've ever watched. With every season following a completely different storyline, with completely different characters, AHS reminds me of Black Mirror, in that some episodes are so unconventional and creative that I, as a viewer, have been forced to become more creative as well, trying to understand the concepts and mysteries of the seasons.

Im not someone who's a huge fan of reading, so it was pretty enjoyable to read something with lots of pictures but also a strong message. For one, as someone who's probably a sixth-generation American citizen, Malaka's tales of discovering her identity and erasing her culture to fit in allowed me to examine my privilege, the fact that will not ever understand life as an immigrant. However, having interfaith parents, I could try to relate my experiences to those of Malaka in her dealing with her mixed religions and cultures.
