With lyrics that is simply poetry, Lana is able to tell stories of her own: domestic abuse, grooming, and miscarriages are just a few of the "taboo" subjects of her music. And while many complain that she romanticizes these traumatic themes, her music acts as an outlet for those who can relate, to understand that they are not alone. I'm jewish, but was never super religious and found going to services at my synagogue to be one of the most boring experiences ever. However, Night allowed me to understand how important religion is to some people, creating a community and a sense of self in many people. For one, as someone who's probably a sixth-generation American citizen, Malaka's tales of discovering her identity and erasing her culture to fit in allowed me to examine my privilege, the fact that will not ever understand life as an immigrant.
