I really appreciated the way that Ratliff discussed his interpretation of a single note and what its implications could be. When talking about the song "Thelonious" Ratliff says "It could describe the world around him changing rapidly, while he stays the same," which is a very interesting explanation for the use of single note in that song. It really adds up considering the song's name is also the artist's name. Ratliff also says "The single note can create a risk," which I find to be especially true. People are often offended by a single note being held for a long period of time while other's feel the artist is showing a certain amount of respect to the listener by including a single note. When listening to "Thelonious" from Ratliff's playlist, there's a very evident use of a single note. As Thelonious Monk holds a piano note for an extended amount of time we really get that feeling of what a single note should be and how it should be used. My example is "Saturn" by Sleeping at Last. Although the note isn't held super long, at the end of the song a piano note is held for a little bit.
