I can say with confidence, that there was always music playing in our home. I was exposed to all manner of music from a very early age. From then on, I was submerged in all types of music, from rockabilly, old school alternative, country, and any other versions of music you can think of. This turned me into a consumer of all things music. It caused me to be so open minded and give any kind of music a try. My musical identity is incredibly fluid, from moments of sheer happiness, to the lowest of lows, so many different types of music have helped me express myself, and even gotten me through some of the hardest times in my life. With every stage of my life, the music that I identify with changes. As I have transitioned through each level of school, through boot camp for the United States Marine Corps, and throughout my stages of adulthood, it is ever changing.

The first time I ever remember really paying attention to it was when my father played Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. At eight years old, I would beg him to play it over and over again until he was so sick of it. I didn’t know what the words meant, but somehow, I was so drawn to the sound. The melody and texture of her voice were so incredibly soothing and warm. I was so entranced by her that I had to hear more. No matter how far I stray, or how lost I get, Fast Car always brings me back home. Now, well on my way to thirty, I still utilize this one memory, this one moment in time, to pull me back home. It reminds me that I always have home, and that I can always reach out to my father for guidance, or for a swift kick in the rear. The lyrics shout out to me to follow my dreams, or to be happy with where I am. They remind me that indifference is not acceptable. The lyrics motivate me to be confident in my decisions and to follow my heart when it comes to my future.

Now, in this wonderous age of technology, we are able to hear other’s interpretations of some of our favorite songs. One of my favorite artists from today’s day and age, is Sam Smith. He is incredibly gifted lyrically and vocally. He has an incredible cover of Fast Car, so much so that when I heard it I was moved to tears. An incredibly talented, and very current artist has taken a beautiful song that was released in 1988 and had the ability to breathe new life into it. He has taken this classic song and exposed it to a much younger generation. He matches Tracy’s smooth vocal, coupled with a gorgeous melody. Each version of this song has found its way on to every single playlist I have. I also, have had the pleasure of exposing my father to new music, as well as new versions of this song. Fast Car has truly come full circle for me.
