This is my first class on this subject and glad that I'm having fun with the learning method conducted by Madam! It was my first experience with PBL and FILA learning method and I couldn't resist the fact that it is much better than having to sit and hear the lecture for 1 hour long. Discussion-based learning really help to prevent students from falling asleep during the 8.30 am class as we need to fully utilize our brain~ During the discussion, I get to differentiate the terms of e-commerce and e-business better. To be honest, for a long time I thought e-commerce and e-business are the same but in fact, it is different. E-commerce defines as digitally enabled commercial transactions between and among organizations and individuals. Meanwhile, E-business involves transactions and processes within a firm involving Information systems under the firm's control.

Moreover, I also know that we're gonna discuss E-commerce in three major trends covering Business, Technology, and Societal aspects. Oh, this is also my first time hearing the 'ubiquity' term, as I never know this word does exist before. Simply, ubiquity = seamless. It's available just about everywhere and anytime! Isn't it cool? The word 'ubiquity' itself portrays a cool term. Also, there's a major difference between Information Richness and Information Density. It may seem similar, but it's not. Information richness characterizes as information shared being very rich through a variety of mediums such as pictures, videos, audio, or any media presentation. On the other hand, information density is the depth of the information given.

Not only that but I also flashback the types of E-commerce when we discussed B2C, B2B, and C2C as I've learned this in the past semester. I used to get confused about what B2B really defines, but now I know! It is simply a business selling to or supplying another business such as a wholesaler and retailer. Not to forget, I also learn the differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0. Web 1.0 is a static HTML with low bandwidth such as E-mail and Forums. Unlike Web 2.0, it upgrades to dynamic HTML with a high bandwidth that could provide rich media content.

I'm super excited to read the Dollar Shave Club's case study. I was only familiar with Gillette before, but knowing the real story of how Dollar Shave Club built its brand really amazes me. To be honest, their brand's name captures my attention since it quite stands out from any other brands that prefer to use an aesthetic and minimal one-word name. From viral video to $1 Billion in just five years, isn't it amazing? From a small startup with a low-cost razor blade to finally disrupting the existence of big brands such as Gillette and Schick. It truly motivates me that nothing is impossible.

During the case study discussion, it was quite fun knowing that everyone capture different inputs from the case study. It really helps me to absorb the context of the whole case study as much as possible since I overlooked some of its parts. Through the discussion, I realize how important is it to prioritize the customer's preference and feedback to come out with products or services that people really need. That's what Dollar Shave Club did, where they uses 500 longest-tenured customers to test new products and offer feedback to improve the usability, functionality, efficiency, and effectiveness of their product. Functionality > 'Over-claimed' features.

Moreover, we also touch on the BMC part and it's a relief that I am still familiar with and remember the concept of the model canvas as I last heard the 'BMC' word during my first year, semester 1. But, the difference is I have a better understanding of how to fill in all the elements in the BMC properly, especially the relationship between Value Proposition and Customer Segments. How the gains and gain creators, pains, and pain relievers are interconnected with each other. Oh, I also remembered that I actually shocked when madam mentioned that Alibaba actually ship internationally :o I thought they only ship within the China area only.

We used the whole time to have a discussion session about OpenTable's case study. Honestly, I never knew this kind of software system (restaurant reservation) does exist since I was only familiar with hotel and transportation reservation systems such as Trivago and Agoda. OpenTable's revenue comes primarily from subscriptions since the restaurants need to install the OpenTable Electronic Reservation Book (ERB) proprietary software. The whole idea of how OpenTable decided to invent a brand new system from the realization of the issue of the restaurant industry that was slow to leverage the power of the internet really amazes me. They used this opportunity to tackle the issue and come out with a solution that gives benefit both parties. I would say that the gamble really paid off.

Besides, I learned about initial public offering (IPO)! It basically refers to the process of offering shares of a private corporation to the public in a new stock issuance for the first time. I have no idea what's that about in the first place... Also, since OpenTable uses subscription as its revenue model, we discussed another company or application that share the same revenue model, such as Spotify and Netflix.

It has been a valuable experience for me to learn how to create a blog using WordPress. It was my first time using it, and I was kinda satisfied with how the blog turned out! :) It was hard for me to familiarize myself with the tools in the first place, but then it was actually really easy to use compared to Blogger (in my opinion).

In the project itself, I did the Channels and Key Resources part. During the discussion after the presentation, I realized that we messed up our BMC a lot and missed some important information. I really thought Channels were only limited to "Social Media" or online platforms that engage customers with the company. But... retail is also included as it can be the place where we can meet and communicate physically with our potential customers. We overlooked the fact that every segment in the BMC is interrelated with each other. Hence, some of the important points are missing in some segments. I learned a lot during the discussion, and hoping that it can be a valuable lesson for us to do the BMC correctly after this.
